Army Vice Chief Emphasizes Armored Vehicle Self-Reliance During Visit to AVNL and CVRDE

In a move highlighting India's commitment to indigenous defense capabilities, Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, the Vice Chief of the Indian Army Staff (VCOAS), recently visited the Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL) and the Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE) at Avadi.

The visit focused on advancements in the nation's armored vehicle fleet, particularly regarding the Main Battle Tank (MBT) Arjun and the upgraded T-90 Mk-III variant of the T-90S Bhishma tank.

Domestic Development and Modernization

Lt Gen Dwivedi received detailed briefings on technological advancements and efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in armored vehicle maintenance and modernization.

Discussions emphasized the use of cutting-edge technologies to repair and overhaul crucial components, such as the MBT Arjun's power pack.

The VCOAS closely examined AVNL and CVRDE's initiatives to indigenize components and subsystems across the Indian Army's diverse armored vehicle platforms.

This push for self-reliance aligns with the broader 'Make in India' campaign, aimed at boosting domestic defense manufacturing.

Praise and Continued Emphasis

Lt Gen Dwivedi praised both organizations for their significant contributions to the development and supply of advanced armored vehicles to the Indian Army.

He stressed the critical need for continued excellence in manufacturing, maintaining, and upgrading tanks and armored fighting vehicles – vital components of India's defense posture.
