Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL), a key player in India's armored vehicle production, is taking a significant step towards modernizing the Indian Army's BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles. The company has released an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the design and development of a powerful new 400HP powerpack, aiming to replace the existing UTD-20/3 engine.

The current 285HP engine will be superseded by a more robust powerplant, promising a substantial leap in performance. This upgrade is expected to deliver higher speeds, improved acceleration, and greater maneuverability across diverse terrains, enhancing the BMP-2's overall combat effectiveness.

The EOI, set to open on October 7, 2024, invites interested companies to submit their proposals for a five-year development contract. The new powerpack will not only boast increased horsepower but also feature an automatic transmission for easier operation and reduced crew workload.

Recognizing the challenging operational environments in India, AVNL has specified the inclusion of a 3-stage dust extraction air filtration system. This is crucial for ensuring the engine's reliability and longevity, particularly in the harsh conditions of the Indian desert.

This modernization initiative aligns with India's growing emphasis on indigenous defence production. By enhancing the capabilities of existing BMP-2 vehicles, AVNL contributes to the Indian Army's combat readiness and reinforces the nation's commitment to self-reliance in defence technology.

While the EOI outlines the core requirements, further details regarding specific technical specifications and evaluation criteria are likely to be revealed when the document is officially released on October 7th. This development is expected to attract significant interest from domestic and potentially international defence companies specializing in powerpack technologies.

Why only 400 hp, it should be 650 hp to give sufficient power to the BMP so that heavy armor to it.

An engine that is more powerful will also be larger and heavier. The BMP-2 isn't a tank for us to be putting armour on it. Splinter protection is about as far as it'll go.

In all seriousness, we should be looking at a proper replacement of the BMP-2. No matter how much we have upgraded it, it is still a very old design with design concepts of that time. But then we get DRDO and DPSUs like AVNL that only want to keep building BMP-2 variants rather than look at a new design.

BMP design is far superior as compared to the latest designs made by DRDO.

Might be possible to make an IFV version of the Zorawar Light Tank.
