BDL Anticipates Surge in ASRAAM Missile Orders from IAF, Ramps Up Domestic Production

Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a leading Indian defence manufacturer, is gearing up for a significant increase in orders for Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missiles (ASRAAM) from the Indian Air Force (IAF) for FY2026-27.

This surge in demand is expected to be met by BDL's newly established domestic production facility, a result of a licensing agreement with MBDA, Europe's premier missile manufacturer.


The facility, dedicated to the final assembly, integration, and testing (FAIT) of ASRAAM missiles, is a testament to India's growing self-reliance in defense technology. The IAF is projected to place substantial orders for ASRAAMs in the coming years, particularly to equip the LCA-Tejas Mk1A fighter jet.

While the IAF's Jaguar aircraft were initially armed with imported ASRAAMs, the domestic production capability now enables India to fulfill its missile requirements independently. This strategic shift not only reduces reliance on foreign suppliers but also bolsters the nation's defense industrial base.

The ASRAAM, known for its exceptional speed, agility, and range, is a new-generation close combat missile designed to provide a decisive edge in aerial warfare. Its domestic production is a major step towards ensuring a steady supply of this critical weapon system for the IAF.

YES. Python5 is deadliest IR CCM agreed. But, ASRAAM is a DIFFERENT class of missile like a "FOX2" which is initially radar-guided release by pilot and fired- Next, terminal IR CCM self-homing to destroy target just the same as R27 of Russia...

What scenarios would a short range missiles on planes be used for? Drones? I would think Astra 1 and 2 would be most effective fight off enemy aircraft.
