Brazil, India Deepen Defence Ties with Submarine Focus

The evolving strategic partnership between India and Brazil is set to reach a new level as the two nations prepare for their inaugural 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue in New Delhi next month.

This groundbreaking diplomatic engagement, confirmed by Brazilian Ambassador Kenneth Haczynski Da Nobrega, highlights the growing significance of defence cooperation within their already flourishing economic relationship.

Submarine Collaboration: A Key Focus

A central pillar of this deepening defence partnership is the potential for extensive collaboration in the field of submarine maintenance and technology.

Brazil, with its fleet of Scorpene-class submarines, and India, possessing a robust domestic submarine program, stand to benefit greatly from mutual technological exchange and cooperation.

Currently, negotiations are underway between the two navies to potentially sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at:
  • Cost Reduction: A core objective of the MoU is to identify and implement strategies to reduce the substantial costs involved in maintaining and repairing Brazil's Scorpene submarines. This could encompass enhanced knowledge sharing, the creation of joint training programs, or even potentially developing cooperative maintenance facilities.
  • Technical Cooperation and Training: The agreement is expected to facilitate greater technical cooperation between the Indian and Brazilian navies. This could mean Indian expertise in submarine maintenance and operations being systematically shared to enhance Brazilian capabilities.
  • Future Development: The potential gains extend beyond immediate maintenance requirements. Brazil's ongoing development of its own nuclear-powered attack submarine program could see it drawing on India's extensive experience in this area. Cooperation could blossom into potential joint ventures and knowledge sharing in future submarine technology development.

Broader Strategic Context

The upcoming 2+2 Dialogue, paired with the potential MoU on submarine cooperation, reflects a strategic alignment between India and Brazil.

As both nations seek to navigate the strategic shifts within the Indo-Pacific region, the strengthening of their defence ties directly contributes to their shared objectives of ensuring maritime security and promoting regional stability.

Conclusion

The intensification of bilateral defence cooperation between India and Brazil marks a significant turning point in their strategic relationship.

The focus on submarines as a key area of collaboration reflects the growing importance both nations place on naval power and their commitment to developing robust capabilities for addressing the evolving security landscape within the Indo-Pacific region.

I think there was some deal where India was going to buy C-390 and brazil was going to buy an Indian system, what happened to it? We should give it a try.

It would be good news if India was allowed to supply any crucial parts or technology to Brazil but most likely only France would provide any parts, spares or servicing. Also India would have spoken to France about being part of the supply chain and increase our participation to all scorpene submarines sold around the world.
