The Chakma Development Foundation of India (CDFI) has submitted a memorandum to Home Minister Amit Shah raising concerns over the infiltration of 1,675 individuals, including 174 Rohingyas, into Tripura from 2021 to April 2024. The CDFI calls for rigorous screening of infiltrators and a comprehensive investigation across the state.
In addition to border security concerns, the CDFI urges the government to provide shelter and protection to religious minorities and ethnic Tiprasa people from Bangladesh seeking refuge in India due to ongoing political turmoil.
"Records indicate that most Rohingya refugees were apprehended in Sepahijala, Unakoti, West Tripura, and North Tripura districts," stated Suhas Chakma, founder of the CDFI. "Limiting the probe to specific areas would not reveal the full extent of infiltration as these individuals move freely within the state and country."
The CDFI welcomes a recent memorandum submitted by Tripura MLA Ranjit Debbarma on the issue and emphasizes the need to address the seizure of lands belonging to indigenous peoples in 28 border villages.
Citing the National Investigation Agency's (NIA) involvement in cases of transnational human trafficking of Rohingya refugees, including the arrest of 21 individuals from Tripura, the CDFI stresses the urgency of a thorough investigation.
The memorandum highlights the movement of intruders within Tripura and beyond, underscoring the potential security risks involved.
This development comes amidst growing concerns over illegal immigration and its impact on the socio-political landscape of the region. The CDFI's call for action reflects a broader demand for transparency and decisive measures to address the issue.
