New Delhi: Recent reports suggest that China may have established a full-scale military base in Tajikistan, disguised as a joint counter-terrorism facility. This development has raised concerns for India and Russia, both of whom have significant stakes in the Central Asian region.
While both China and Tajikistan have denied the existence of such a base, sources have confirmed that a Chinese military facility, complete with observation towers and Chinese troops, is located in a remote mountainous area in Tajikistan, at an altitude of 13,000 feet. The agreement for this facility was purportedly signed in 2021, following developments in Afghanistan.
The presence of a Chinese military base in Central Asia, particularly in Tajikistan near the Afghan border and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), has significant geopolitical implications. India and Russia, both regional powers, have historical ties with Tajikistan and are concerned about China's growing influence in the region.
Russia maintains a military base in Tajikistan, and India has previously worked closely with the country to address terror threats. Notably, India operated out of the Ayni air base in Tajikistan between 2002 and 2010, investing nearly $70 million in its renovation. However, this facility was later wound up.
The establishment of a Chinese military base in Tajikistan could significantly alter the regional security landscape and potentially exacerbate existing tensions. It remains to be seen how India and Russia will respond to this development and what impact it will have on their relations with both China and Tajikistan.
