CUMI Collaborates with DRDO to Boost India's Material Science Expertise

Carborundum Universal Limited (CUMI), a leading player in materials science and part of the respected Murugappa Group, is making significant contributions to India's defense technology sector.

Through its strategic partnership with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), CUMI is bolstering the nation's self-reliance in defense technology while enhancing its preparedness.

Supplying Critical Components for Ballistic Protection

CUMI's collaboration with DRDO centers on providing advanced ceramic materials that are vital for the manufacture of ballistic protection solutions. These materials are integral to the creation of lightweight bulletproof equipment and armored vehicles.

Remarkably, CUMI manufactures these ceramic plates and tiles domestically, demonstrating its dedication to promoting homegrown production within India's defense sector.

The lightweight ceramic ballistic protection materials developed by CUMI include reaction-bonded silicon carbide, high-purity alumina, and zirconia-toughened alumina.

These are designed to meet the demanding requirements of international standards like the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) ‘Level IV’ and STANAG Level 3.

The materials provide exceptional resistance against ballistic threats and can be tailored in size and shape to perfectly suit their integration into protective gear and vehicles.

Thermal Spray Coatings for Aerospace Advancement

Beyond ballistic protection, CUMI also works alongside DRDO research organizations to create fine powders essential to ceramic thermal spray coatings.

These coatings are critical to the production and upkeep of aircraft engines and components, safeguarding them from high temperatures and wear.

CUMI's commitment to innovation in this area drives improvements in thermal spray coating technology, catering to the evolving needs of India's aerospace industry.

The Importance of Indigenization

CUMI's contributions to India's defense indigenization are crucial. Developing materials and technologies within India reduces reliance on foreign imports, enhances the capabilities of the domestic defense industry, and strengthens national security.

CUMI's dedication to this effort ensures that Indian forces have the best possible equipment and India maintains its strategic technological autonomy.

DRDO mastering and manufacturing of Tejas IA and various missiles radomes itself speaks volumes about its advancement in material technologies.

Also, Midhani mastered the art of making some high temperature alloys and also single chrystal blades for helicopter engines and it is also a great achievement.

In about 5 to 10 years time, India can have great breakthroughs in these fields with even more R&D investments in universities, public and private labs, and public and private companies.
R&D investment is the key.

This is good news as we want more Indian companies that can manufacture and provide a lot of defence products ranging from body armour to armour plating on vehicles. It is better that DRDO partner with CUMI who has a lot of knowledge and experience in making life saving armour.
