The fragile peace in Manipur continues to be shattered by recurring violence. On Wednesday night, fresh clashes erupted in Koutruk Ching Leikai district when suspected Kuki militants attacked the village with gunfire and bombs.
State security forces retaliated, leading to an exchange of fire that lasted until 2 am on Thursday. While no casualties were reported in this latest incident, it underscores the deep-seated tensions and ongoing conflict in the region.
This attack comes as the National Investigation Agency (NIA), in conjunction with Manipur Police, has begun an on-site investigation into the drone bombing that targeted Koutruk village on September 1st.
This incident, which marked the first use of drone bombs against a Meitei village, resulted in the death of 31-year-old Ngangbam Surbala and injuries to her young daughter. Initially investigated by Imphal West Police, the case was transferred to the NIA on September 19th.
Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence since May 3rd of last year, a conflict that has claimed the lives of over 230 people and displaced approximately 60,000.
The violence stems from clashes between the Meitei community, predominantly residing in the Imphal valley, and the Kuki-Zo tribal groups inhabiting the hill districts. The initial trigger was a 'Tribal Solidarity March' organized to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
The situation has been further complicated by the use of sophisticated weaponry, including drone bombs and rocket-propelled grenades. In response to these escalating tactics, security forces have deployed anti-drone systems in an attempt to counter the threat.
Despite efforts to quell the violence and restore peace, Manipur remains on edge. The recovery of thousands of looted arms and ammunition remains a key challenge for authorities.
