President Donald Trump has stated that he expects to have the "honor" of "taking Cuba in some form". These comments were made as Cuba faced a nationwide power grid collapse following a months-long U.S. oil blockade.
During a White House briefing, Trump told reporters, "I do believe I’ll be having the honor of taking Cuba... whether I free it, take it—think I could do anything I want with it".
Trump has signaled that Cuba is "next" after his administration's recent actions in the region, including the ouster of the Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in January 2026 and ongoing military operations involving Iran.
Earlier in 2026, the administration declared a national emergency regarding Cuba, describing the nation as an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to U.S. security.
The U.S. has enforced a strict oil embargo, threatening any nation that supplies fuel to the island with heavy tariffs. This has crippled Cuba’s energy grid, leading to blackouts lasting up to 20 hours a day.
The Trump administration is reportedly seeking the removal of Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel. While Trump has mused about a "friendly takeover," he has also suggested that it "may not be a friendly takeover".
