In a major boost to India's indigenous submarine development program, a state-of-the-art Land-Based Submarine Battery Test Facility was inaugurated today at the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL).

The facility, jointly inaugurated by the Secretary of Defence Research and Development (DDR&D) and the Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will play a crucial role in testing advanced lithium-ion batteries designed specifically for submarines.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the Director General (Naval Systems and Materials), the Director of NSTL, and leading scientists from the organization. This new facility represents a significant step towards India's goal of achieving self-reliance in critical defense technologies.

The development of these advanced lithium-ion batteries is being spearheaded by NSTL. In collaboration with M/s. HBL Power Systems, Hyderabad, the technology transfer holder, the project has successfully produced the necessary cells and modules, integrated with HBL's proprietary Battery Management System. The selected cell chemistry prioritizes safety during all stages, from storage and transportation to operation.

This cutting-edge facility is equipped to simulate a wide range of operational conditions that a submarine might encounter at sea, including varying speeds and maneuvering scenarios. This allows for a comprehensive evaluation of the battery's performance under realistic conditions.

This development aligns with India's broader strategy to enhance its naval capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. The focus on indigenous technology underscores the nation's commitment to strengthening its defence capabilities and promoting self-reliance in strategic sectors.
