The DRDO is poised to select an industry collaborator for the advancement of an Electro-Magnetic Launch System (EMALS).

This cutting-edge technology is set to revolutionize naval operations by enabling the launch of projectiles at speeds surpassing Mach 6. The EMALS, designed in a compact and mobile configuration, represents a pivotal stride in the Indian Navy's modernization initiatives, particularly for its future aircraft carriers.

The project, spearheaded by DRDO's Research & Development Establishment (Engineers) [R&DE(E)], has already achieved a significant milestone with the successful development of a scaled technology demonstrator.

This demonstrator has effectively launched payloads weighing up to 400 kg, comparable to a UAV, across a short distance of 16 to 18 meters, validating the technology's potential and paving the way for its further development.

With the technology demonstrator successfully tested, the focus now shifts to scaling up these efforts to create a fully operational EMALS system for naval applications. This full-fledged system will be an indispensable asset for future Indian aircraft carriers, offering superior capabilities compared to traditional steam-powered catapults.

The Electro-Magnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) is an advanced system that utilizes electrical energy to launch aircraft from the deck of an aircraft carrier. It offers several advantages over steam catapults, including greater launch flexibility, increased efficiency, and reduced maintenance.

These benefits make EMALS a game-changer for naval aviation and are essential for the next generation of aircraft carriers that will be capable of launching more advanced and heavier platforms, including unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and heavier fighter jets.

The development of EMALS hinges on two core technologies, linear electric machine technology and pulse power technology, both of which are being pioneered by R&DE(E). These technologies will underpin the EMALS system, ensuring it can handle the demanding task of launching heavy aircraft with both power and precision.

As India charts its course to expand its naval capabilities with more advanced aircraft carriers, the development of EMALS becomes increasingly critical. It will provide the Indian Navy with a technological advantage by enabling the launch of more versatile and heavier aircraft, thereby augmenting the carrier's overall combat capability.

Furthermore, the compact and mobile configuration of EMALS opens doors for its application on other platforms beyond aircraft carriers, such as mobile launchers for various payloads.

The successful implementation of these technologies will not only elevate the operational capabilities of India’s future aircraft carriers but also position India among the leading nations capable of producing such state-of-the-art naval systems.

India has to develop this technology, make a full scale model, prove the system on land and run a lot of tests before we even decide to install it on a carrier. Also whatever designs and plans we were making for our next carrier we will have to make major changes.

A full fledged system capable of launching a distributed weight of over 40 tons to accelerate speeds of take off over a distance less than 75 -100 meters will be required with over 3000 test launches ashore before it can be used on board . Designed fro over 250 -300 launches per day the system will need to be tested for over 3 years day and night to achieve the consistency , reliability and durability before aircraft and pilots are put to minimized risk afloat.

If EMALS take another 3 to 4 years then can India order for the aircraft carrier in next 6 to 8 months time or we seeing a further more delay?

I don't understand. "This cutting-edge technology is set to revolutionize naval operations by enabling the launch of projectiles at speeds surpassing Mach 6". How is it possible? That's hypersonic speed. Are these projectiles aircraft or something else? Mach 6 mentioned, is that launch speed? Launching projectiles at speeds surpassing Mach 6 might be a Railgun not EMALS. Please clarify.
