DRDO Seeks Cutting-Edge Tech for Netra Mk-1A Airborne Early Warning System

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has called for tenders to equip its next-generation airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) system, the Netra Mk-1A, with cutting-edge technology. This advanced system will boost India’s aerial surveillance capabilities, providing crucial eyes and ears in the sky.

The Netra Mk-1A, an upgrade of the existing Mk-1 system, promises significant improvements. Its mission suite will comprise approximately 15 aerial sub-systems and components, along with ground-based elements. These include:
  • Active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar: This powerful radar will provide enhanced detection and tracking capabilities, with a range exceeding 450 kilometers compared to the Mk-1’s 240 kilometers.
  • Secondary surveillance radar: This radar will identify and track friendly aircraft, improving situational awareness.
  • Advanced radomes: These protective shields will ensure optimal radar performance in various weather conditions.
  • Robust communication systems: Secure and reliable communication channels will be crucial for coordinating air defense operations.
  • Electronic warfare suite: This suite will encompass electronic support measures, radar warning receivers, and missile approach warning systems, providing vital information on enemy threats.
  • Satellite communication: Real-time data exchange with ground control will be facilitated through satellite communication links.
  • Defensive countermeasures: The Netra Mk-1A will be equipped with systems to counter enemy electronic attacks and missile threats.
  • Advanced workstations: User-friendly workstations will allow operators to effectively analyze and interpret radar data.
  • Identification friend or foe (IFF) system: This system will distinguish friendly aircraft from enemy ones, ensuring safe engagement.
By integrating these cutting-edge technologies, the Netra Mk-1A will significantly enhance India’s ability to detect, track, and neutralize aerial threats. This will provide invaluable early warning and situational awareness to the Indian Air Force, strengthening its air defense capabilities.

The DRDO’s tender issuance marks a crucial step towards realizing this ambitious project. The selection of vendors and subsequent development and integration of these technologies will be closely watched, as it promises to usher in a new era of aerial surveillance for India.
