DRDO to Transfer Technology of 155mm x 52 Cal Gun Barrel to Indian Vendors, Aims to Promote Domestic Manufacturing and Potential Export

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has announced its intention to transfer the technology for manufacturing 155mm x 52 calibre gun barrels to Indian companies. This move is expected to boost domestic defence production and potentially lead to exports of this critical artillery component.

The DRDO has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) inviting Indian vendors to acquire the technology for producing these gun barrels, which have a chamber capacity of 23 litres. This larger chamber enables the use of Zone-6 charge propellants, allowing for increased range when firing standard 155mm ammunition.

Extensive testing has proven the barrel's reliability and durability in diverse conditions, ensuring it can withstand the demands of modern warfare. By acquiring this technology, Indian companies will be able to manufacture these advanced barrels, contributing to the Indian Army's artillery firepower and range.

This initiative aligns with the government's "Make in India" policy, promoting self-reliance in defence production. It presents a significant opportunity for Indian defence manufacturers to expand their capabilities and contribute to national security. Moreover, the potential for exporting these gun barrels to other countries opens up new avenues for revenue generation and strengthens India's position in the global defence market.

The 155mm x 52 calibre artillery system is widely used globally, including by the Indian Army. The ability to manufacture these barrels domestically will reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and ensure a consistent supply for India's defence needs. This transfer of technology could also lead to further innovation and development in artillery technology within India.

Good. Is 155 mm 52 cal a standard or bigger rounds are there? Or rockets are used beyond these rounds

This is exactly what I wanted. DRDO like DARPA in USA develops technology and tests prototypes and then sells it over to Private sector. DARPA makes its money back they spent on R&D. Then private sector takes over and starts production and then does R&D of its own and keep improving it.

HAL NEEDS TO DO THE SAME!

The 155mm is the diameter of the artillery round and the 52 cal is the length of the artillery gun barrel.

This is a good opportunity for the private sector to manufacture and sell the guns and the more companies that manufacture the gun will reduce the price by making them more competitive.

There should be very strict terms and conditions with this type of deal though. First the IPR should stay with DRDO who will then issue a license to the company to manufacture the guns. This will allow DRDO to charge a small royalty fee for every gun sold which will allow DRDO to recuperate their investment costs. Also all of the guns should be manufactured 100% indigenously and using indigenous raw materials only.

DRDO technology is good and that is why Tata, Mahindra, Bharat Forge and L&T and many other invest in it.

HAL is supposed to be production agency while DRDO is supposed to focus on R and D
