From Peace to Power: Japan Awakens to the China Threat, Defence Reboot Begins

We all know the saying, "starting a war is easier than ending one." But beyond the direct battlefield horrors, wars create ripples and shockwaves that change the world in surprising ways. The Ukraine War is one such example, and nowhere is this more apparent than thousands of miles away in Japan.

For decades since World War II, Japan has leaned strongly into a pacifist approach – a quiet but powerful country, sure, but not one focused on building a traditional military force. But then came Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and that, combined with the "no limits" friendship China and Russia announced right before the war started, has pushed Japan to make some dramatic changes. Why, you might ask? Because Japan has had long-standing tensions with both Russia and China.

Japan and the US: A Supercharged Alliance

This year, US President Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida met in Washington, calling it a "new era" for their countries' partnership. It wasn't all talk either – they laid out real plans. Imagine their forces even more connected, sharing secret strategies, even developing new weapons together! The idea is for the US and Japan to move as one seamless whole.

But it's not just about teamwork. Japan is also strengthening its own forces by creating a new military command structure. Think of it like switching from having a bunch of superheroes working solo to forming their own Avengers-style squad!

Eyes on the Sky, Sharing Secrets

Japan and the US also want to connect their air defense systems – imagine a tech shield not just for Japan, but including the US and even Australia. It's about detecting threats early and taking them out.

Plus, they're not stopping there. New communications networks for secure sharing, joint fighter plane training, co-developing new tech... the list goes on! They're even taking a serious look at having Japan join part of the AUKUS alliance for even more advanced weapons development.

Why All the Sudden Change?

Remember when Prime Minister Kishida said that the Ukraine invasion was shaking the very foundation of international order? He wasn't just talking about Europe. He was thinking, "What if China were to try something similar with Taiwan?" From Japan's viewpoint, a conflict there could endanger their shipping routes and bring unwanted pressure from China close to home.

Just last December, Japan dropped a major policy bombshell, declaring China "the biggest strategic challenge" they've ever faced and ditching past hesitation about naming threats outright. But words are just words, right? Not for Japan. They've shifted from a purely defensive stance to one that includes the ability to strike back at an enemy's bases far away. This is a huge change, and they're putting their money where their mouth is: new long-range missiles, a deal to buy hundreds of US Tomahawks, and they're even building up their cyberwarrior forces!

Forget the Old Limits

Japan used to have a hard limit on defense spending: no more than 1% of their GDP. But that's so last year! Now they're eyeing 2%, catching up to what NATO countries spend, which could vault them past India to become the third biggest spender on defense in the world.

Teaming Up Against China

The US used to keep its alliances separate, like the spokes on a bicycle wheel. But now they're connecting those spokes! Think joint wargames, shared intel, new military bases, and countries cooperating on advanced tech. Even the UK is getting in on the action with joint exercises.

US played his cards masterfully. He's brought India closer on one side of the Indo-Pacific, and now he's energized Japan at the other end. The message to China is clear: wars of aggression have consequences, and if you stir up trouble, you may just find yourself facing a united front instead of picking countries off one by one.
