HAL to Deliver First Tejas Mk-1A Jet with Reserved F404 Engine to IAF by October-end as Software Iterations Completed

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is finally set to receive a much-needed boost to its fighter strength as the first of the 83 Tejas Mk 1A combat aircraft is scheduled for delivery by October-end. This comes as a relief to the force, which has been grappling with depleting fighter squadrons for several years.

The Tejas Mk 1A project has faced several delays, with the initial delivery target of March 2024 being pushed back due to a combination of factors, including necessary software iterations and delays in the supply of new engines from General Electric.

The first aircraft will be delivered with Category B engines, which are essentially reserve engines that may have been used in the past or those remaining from a previous deal. However, the HAL expects to receive brand new General Electric F404-IN20 engines from November onwards, as per a revised schedule provided by the engine manufacturer.

The Tejas program has been a long and arduous journey for India, spanning nearly four decades. It was initiated in 1983 with the ambitious goal of producing the first aircraft by 1994. However, the prototype only flew in 2001, and the first aircraft with final clearance was handed over to the IAF in 2019.

The Mk 1A variant itself is the result of a compromise reached in 2015, with the IAF opting for a more immediate upgrade to the existing Tejas platform instead of waiting for the development of the Tejas Mk-2, which would have involved significant structural changes.

Despite the delays, the IAF remains committed to the Tejas program, with plans to procure an additional 97 Mk 1A aircraft. In fact, the IAF recently proposed a public-private partnership model to set up more production lines for the Tejas, as it prepares to induct nearly 300 variants of the indigenous fighter over the next decade and a half.

Sir, assuming that the new engine is delivered by November, the aircraft would be delivered earliest in December if the new engine were to be fitted.

That said, HAL has claimed about having 3-4 airframes almost ready. Let's see if they can deliver them once we get 4-6 engines from GE.

Great news. MkA1 is the best 4.5 gen fighter in the world. DRDO has really worked hard for last 45 years to develop this ground breaking fighter.

Even 1.5 engines a month is well more than sufficient to alleviate the engine bottlenecks. Let's see how that goes.
 
Lol...wait for next month end it will become next month again. They have lied all these days about GE404 engines. But they didn't even deliver the ones that they were testing. Looks like they will need a new excuse one GE starts delivering engines. Salute to those who support HAL.

I just hope we can sort out the GE404 problems fast…In any case max 404 engines available for the next few years may be 16-20 per year, so there is no way HAL can deliver 180 Tejas Mk1As by 2030-2032, a real shame that should have been planned for earlier…
 
I sincerely hope that the jet gets delivered as its technology, equipment and critical sensors and components has been certified and it can be used on the front line straight away.

HAL needs to start manufacturing the maximum amount of jets in the shortest amount of time as much as possible. If they can’t then they should give a license to many of the private sector companies to manufacture most of the parts and technology. Then HAL should only manufacture the classified products and technology which will also reduce the work load on HAL. The company has a lot of projects to do from Tejas MK2, TEDBF, AMCA, HLFT, IMRH, multiple drones, dornier and flight equipments etc. Then they have to conduct upgrades, maintenance, repairs and overhaul the jets, helicopters and drones. This will lighten the workload for HAL
 
Hopefully no more nonsense. Two engines a month from November on means they should have the capacity for 24 a year. So the engines should be no bar for their 16/year goal. Almost a squadron a year from here which sounds alright. I do think we should pursue a private production line like Tata as well though, especially getting ready for MK2.
 
What about the spare engines that are available? Not even a single jet delivered? Please don't defend HAL.
Yeah, before the engine delay came up they were saying it was a last minute change that delayed it. They have cat b engines in temperature controlled storage that are ready to go and work as good as new, that if necessary could have been swapped out with the new engines when they arrive.

It's just excuse making, With 24 engines per year coming from November on, lets see if they can deliver their 16 jets a year.

Nope, Sir. Even 2 engines a month translates to 24 engines a year, which then means around 16-18 aircraft a year (assuming one wants to build up a spares reserve as well). 16 aircraft a year fot 8 years is 128 aircraft, while 18 a year takes it up to 144.

180 aircraft in 8 years is a bridge too far.

So best case production of Mk1A will be on till 2035, unless the rate of engine production goes up - so why order another 97 planes, when they can’t be delivered when we need them…Could HAL assemble 404s to increase engine availability or given the low rate GE supply chain there is no hope?

Also hopefully AMCA and Tejas Mk2 need to be also produced starting 2035/2030…GOI must bankroll TATAS to also produce/assemble fighters at least starting Mk2 and AMCA…

God help us…
