HAL to Manufacture Critical Engine Components and Landing Gear Parts in New High-Capacity Forging Facility

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is taking a major step towards bolstering India's aerospace manufacturing capabilities with the establishment of a new High-Capacity Forging Facility. This cutting-edge facility will be crucial for producing critical components used in aircraft engines and landing gear.

Equipped with advanced machinery like Hydraulic Presses and Isothermal Forging Presses, the facility will manufacture complex, high-strength forgings such as discs, blisks, shafts for aero-engines, bulkheads, and landing gear parts. These components are essential for aircraft performance and reliability, and their production within India will significantly reduce dependence on imports.

HAL has issued a Request for Quotation (RFQ) for Engineering Consultancy services to kickstart the project. The selected consultant will be responsible for developing a comprehensive Project Report, including technical specifications, cost estimates, and a detailed project timeline. Furthermore, the consultant will conduct market research to identify potential suppliers and partners for this ambitious undertaking.

This strategic investment by HAL aligns with the Indian government's vision of transforming the nation into a global aerospace manufacturing hub. By establishing this new facility, HAL aims to:
  • Reduce reliance on imports: Producing these critical components domestically will decrease dependence on foreign suppliers, ensuring a more secure and self-reliant aerospace supply chain.
  • Enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities: The facility will contribute to the development of advanced manufacturing skills and technologies within India.
  • Boost the Indian aerospace industry: This initiative will create new jobs and stimulate growth across the aerospace sector.
 
One US company makes the biggest and heaviest stamping machine that HAL ever ordered 2 yrs ago for lca. That company is one of the best.

Even the local supplier will have a ToT with Eagle or ALCOA. These machines are built in countries that regularly make planes for decades and have refined and scaled based on demand and research. 70s HAL Ajit did not need these types of casting i suppose.
 
This is a critical requirement and it will hopefully lead to reducing the amount of expensive foreign imports in parts and components. This is something that the private industry can develop the forge and not just import it from the west.
 
The American water hydraulic machine capable of producing 4 million pounds per sq inch of pressure is used for making Aluminum forgings and parts. Hope the Indian press is of near similar capacity.
 
Instead of being able to manufature the Kaveri engine indigenously, we manufacture nuts and bolts and so proudly claim about the same. YUCK.
 
Ain't no way india still doesn't possess these equipment for their aerospace manufacturing needs
There was never any need for these hitech presses possibly due to ckd assembly followed in the past. This is new production process similar to Tesla gigapress.
 
This is like manufacturing the toothpaste tube, the cap and the box. And it is glorified. What about manufacturing the actual toothpaste?

Same for HAL - they get satisfied assembling aircraft, mating a foreign engine with Tejas aircraft etc..but can never ever manufacture and engine 100%

So stop gloating on small achievements.

If ISRO has been able to make huge strides, why not HAL - it shows calibre of the leaders at the top and & management capabilities.

It is high time the government stops promoting internal HAL staff to the senior leadership always and must have an option to bring in Leadership from outside such as IITs, IISc or ISRO to head critical functions within HAL
 
We are atleast 50 years behind in manufacturing the state of art equipment. It shoes how the successive governments didn't allow science and research to grow.
