The Indian Air Force (IAF) is moving to bolster its aerial capabilities by acquiring six new mid-air refueling aircraft from a global supplier. This upgrade aims to replace its aging fleet of Soviet-era IL-78 tankers, which are over 30 years old, and enhance the operational range of its fighter jets and helicopters.
Mid-air refuelers act as flying fuel stations, allowing aircraft to extend their missions without landing. The Indian Ministry of Defence has outlined detailed requirements, signaling a 'Buy Global' approach that opens the competition to international manufacturers. American and European suppliers, notably Boeing with its KC-46 Pegasus and Airbus with their Multi Role Tanker Transport (both often based on commercial airliners), are likely contenders.
The move towards acquiring new tankers highlights India's growing focus on modernizing its defense assets. In 2022, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) partnered with Israel Aerospace Industries to explore converting civilian aircraft into multi-role refueling tankers domestically. This strategy was previously approved by India's Defence Acquisition Council in February.
The procurement of these advanced mid-air refuelers would significantly expand the IAF's reach and operational flexibility. This development underscores India's commitment to maintaining a robust air defense posture in the region.
