The Indian Air Force (IAF) has provided its explanation to the Delhi High Court on the accidental firing of a BrahMos supersonic cruise missile into Pakistan in March 2022.
The incident, sparked by human error during technical maintenance, has resulted in ongoing legal proceedings and underscores the risks associated with such mishaps.
Technical Error and Financial Implications
The IAF report reveals that the missile was accidentally launched due to a critical failure in adherence to safety protocols. Essential combat connectors remained attached to the BrahMos missile's junction box, resulting in the unintended firing. The IAF acknowledges the significant financial losses stemming from this incident. The Court of Inquiry has estimated that the government exchequer faces a loss of approximately Rs. 24.9 crore.
Furthermore, the accidental launch caused diplomatic tensions with Pakistan.
Investigation and Dispute Over Culpability
The IAF's Court of Inquiry blamed the misfire on three members of the Combat Team: Group Captain Saurabh Gupta, Squadron Leader Pranjal Singh, and Wing Commander Abhinav Sharma. The Court emphasizes the severity and reputational damage caused by the incident. However, Wing Commander Sharma has filed a petition with the Delhi High Court, placing responsibility on his superiors, Air Commodore JT Kurien and a Squadron Leader. Sharma contends they overlooked safety measures that could have averted the accidental firing.
The IAF contests Sharma's claims, maintaining he was present throughout the maintenance process within the Mobile Autonomous Launcher and had full awareness of all actions performed by his Operations Officer.
Awaiting a Precedent-Setting Verdict
The Delhi High Court's ruling is pending and is anticipated to determine who bears ultimate accountability for the incident. The verdict in this case has the potential to set a precedent for how future incidents of this nature are handled. The IAF's explanation clarifies the technical error behind the misfire and provides insights into the ongoing legal battle surrounding responsibility.
