Bapatla District, Andhra Pradesh – In a display of operational flexibility, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully tested an Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) located directly on National Highway-16 in Andhra Pradesh. This activation demonstrates a significant enhancement to the IAF's response capabilities in both defense operations and disaster relief scenarios.
The exercise showcased the ELF's versatility, with a range of IAF aircraft participating. Fighter jets like the Su-30 MKI and Hawk Mk-132 trainers demonstrated their ability to be swiftly deployed from the highway strip, while transport aircraft like the An-32 and Dornier Do-228 successfully performed landings and takeoffs. The test highlights the ELF's potential for logistical support and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) missions.
By utilizing strategically positioned ELFs on national highways, the IAF significantly expands its operational reach. These facilities act as crucial alternative landing locations in emergencies or when traditional airbases become unavailable. This enhanced flexibility allows the IAF to respond decisively to threats and contingencies throughout India.
The recent ELF activation on NH-16 holds particular significance for HADR missions. During natural disasters or crises, these highway landing strips enable the rapid delivery of vital supplies and personnel to affected regions. This could be invaluable in situations where communities are isolated from main airfields.
