India, Brazil Discuss Joint Production of Defence Products, Scorpene Club in Focus

India and Brazil are strengthening their strategic partnership with moves towards the co-development and production of a significant range of defence equipment.

According to sources with knowledge of ongoing discussions, up to two dozen defence products could be part of this collaborative effort.

Shifting Focus for Domestic Production

A shortlist of potential co-development projects reportedly includes armored vehicles and small arms.

This highlights a strategic move for both nations towards boosting domestic production of essential military equipment, lessening reliance on external procurement.

Collaboration Beyond Equipment: The "Scorpene Club"

India and Brazil are also exploring avenues for collaboration that extend beyond the co-development of new equipment.

Both nations operate Scorpene-class submarines built by France's Naval Group and Spain's Navantia. This shared experience has fueled discussions about the potential formation of a "Scorpene Club."

This collaboration could center around knowledge sharing, establishing joint maintenance procedures, and potentially even future upgrades for these submarine platforms.

Strategic Implications

A deepening defence partnership between India and Brazil carries substantial strategic weight.

By leveraging their combined technological expertise and harnessing their production resources, both countries aim to achieve greater self-sufficiency in their national security capabilities.

This collaboration could lessen their reliance on defence imports while bolstering their strategic autonomy.

Great idea.
But like many other countries and defense companies, Brazil and Embraer do not want to transfer any kinds of TOTs to start with and that is why it was not moving forward at all.

Although not a traditional military powerhouse,Brazil has a very competent and competitive arms industry from aerospace to small arms.India should further develop its ties with Brazil going forward.

India should continue to advertise its military weapons and technology that it can manufacture and sell at a cheaper price along with developing any critical new technology that will help many.

Embraer should set up Local manufacturing for its product line. India should order and use Embraer products both civilian and Military products. Need alternative to Airbus and Boeing in India.
