The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) will receive a significant boost to its operational capabilities after securing a $23.27 million USD loan from the Export-Import Bank of India (EXIM Bank). The loan will finance the acquisition of two Indian-made Dornier Do-228 aircraft from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This deal marks a major step in the GDF's continuing modernization program.
The financing agreement was officially signed on Friday by Guyana's Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh, and Deputy General Manager of EXIM Bank, Sanjay Lamba. The Guyana Ministry of Finance highlighted the role of President Ali's visit to HAL in January 2023 as a key catalyst for the agreement.
The Dornier Do-228 is a highly versatile twin-engine turboprop aircraft highly regarded for its utility and maritime patrol (MPA) capabilities. Its potential roles for the GDF include the transportation of troops and supplies, search and rescue missions, and securing Guyana's expansive coastline. The addition of these aircraft will significantly enhance the GDF's capacity to protect Guyana's territory and its people.
