Indian Army Advises MoD Against US Stryker Purchase Following Disappointing High-Altitude Trials, Favouring Indigenous AAP Alternative

In a notable shift in India’s defence procurement strategy, the Indian Army has recommended that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) reconsider its plans to acquire Stryker Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) from the United States. This recommendation follows unsatisfactory performance by the American vehicle during high-altitude trials.

The Army is now advocating for an enhanced indigenous alternative, the Advanced Armoured Platform (AAP) Wheeled, a new version of the Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) 8×8, developed through a collaboration between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian private sector defence firms.

The Stryker, an 8×8 wheeled infantry fighting vehicle produced by General Dynamics Land Systems, was initially considered for acquisition via a government-to-government agreement with the U.S. However, trials conducted in demanding high-altitude conditions, such as those found in Ladakh, revealed significant operational deficiencies.

The vehicle, powered by a Caterpillar C7 engine reportedly in the 300-360 hp range, struggled to perform adequately in mountainous regions. This capability is crucial for India, given its sensitive border areas and ongoing territorial disputes.

Reports emerging around February 2025, following trials in late 2024, indicated that the Stryker did not meet the Army's stringent requirements. Its design, optimized for U.S. expeditionary warfare, reportedly lacked the logistical suitability for India’s diverse and rugged operational landscapes. Some reports suggested a potential engine upgrade to 600hp was offered by the manufacturer for re-trials.

The Indian Army’s comprehensive evaluation process clearly identified the Stryker's limitations. This outcome has drawn attention from defence analysts, with some questioning the MoD's initial consideration of the foreign platform, particularly given the subsequent trial results.

The situation has also amplified the ongoing national emphasis on self-reliant defence production, as opting for the Stryker would have directed significant funds to overseas contractors for a platform deemed less suitable than domestically developed options.

In a strong display of indigenous capability, the DRDO, working closely with prominent private sector partners such as Tata Advanced Systems and Bharat Forge, has initiated the development of the AAP Wheeled variant.

This platform is an upgraded version of the existing WhAP 8×8. A significant step in this indigenous defence innovation was the metal-cutting ceremony for the AAP prototypes (both wheeled and tracked versions), which took place on April 2, 2025, at Tata’s facility in Pune, with a projected rollout by October 2025.

The original WhAP, which is already in limited service with the Indian Army and paramilitary forces, has demonstrated its capabilities in challenging environments, including high-altitude operations in Ladakh and amphibious warfare scenarios.

The forthcoming AAP Wheeled variant is engineered to build upon the proven strengths of the WhAP. It promises enhanced modularity, scalability, and reconfigurability, making it adaptable for a wide array of combat roles.

Designed with robust steel armour plates and lightweight composite materials, the AAP is specifically tailored for Indian operational conditions. It is expected to offer superior all-terrain mobility, enhanced mine blast protection, and the capacity to integrate advanced weapon systems, including anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs).

A key aspect of its development is the emphasis on local sourcing, with over 80% of its components being indigenous, directly contributing to the "Atmanirbhar Bharat" policy and reducing reliance on foreign military hardware.

The Indian Army is reportedly moving forward with the procurement of 198 units of the WhAP under the Buy (Indian-IDDM - Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category. Platforms like Tata’s Kestrel (a WhAP derivative) and a wheeled armoured platform from Mahindra are considered leading contenders for this requirement, effectively diminishing the prospects for the Stryker.

The development and prioritisation of the AAP underscore the Army’s commitment to fielding a versatile, locally manufactured platform capable of addressing the complex demands of modern warfare, particularly in light of prevailing border security challenges.

Nice, There was no need for even conducting trials when the indigenous option was available. They should have given feedback for modification or changes according to the requirement, but after failing or having shortcomings, then changing the decision is not a good thing for the indigenous platform, where WhAP got a foreign order from Morocco.

Thank God but still biggest question is why even evaluate Stryker when we have home grown platforms and that to outclassing Stryker in every dept.

Instead we should push for Landing Ship Dock which are necessary for transport and assault via seas which are required given the enemy neighbours has large sea fronts.

Very practical and welcome decision, there are tons of American gear that the Services would need, but the Stryker ain't one of them.

Right now we don't have any such alternatives buddy. In the last trial WhAP didn't meet the requirements of the IA. And currently IA has issued a fresh tender. Once they clear those trials we will (most likely) have such a homegrown platform.

As for the trials, I guess most likely it was offered by US and MoD couldn't say no directly due to Trump's pressure hence these shenanigans.

Now this is a surprising development. Finally we are pushing for indigenous platforms instead of foreign ones. Congratulations.
We have been pushing them for a while now buddy. IA is placing 100% of it's orders with domestic firms exclusively since 2022 (data for last fiscal is pending). In the drones category also we are rarely importing anything. Same with our armored trucks etc.

Problem always crops up when you put DRDO/DPSUs in the mix. DRDO was the lead agency here, that's why we are seeing so many delays. If this was left to Tata or Mahindra or L&T, we would have seen massive inductions already.

The government had no intention of buying the Stryker at all and simply said that they will look at its performance knowing full well that it wouldn’t pass any of its test.

We now need to focus on quickly developing the AAP with the latest technology. Kalyani are developing a brand new turret which includes a 30mm main gun, remote machine gun, ATGM, grenade launcher, laser range etc which is good.

We have already developed the armour and other equipment and technology so one we finish developing the turret then we can install it. After it’s installed and tested properly we can then start production in larger numbers.

Any serious country worth its salt won't even consider foreign vendor if local options exists. But here we are.
None do, as of now. In the last trials, WhAP didn't perform as expected. That's why a second tender, with more candidates has been initiated. This one is under IDDM, so now IA does expect some Indian candidate to meet the requirements. But no one has at least as of now demonstrated that they are better than Stryker on the ground. They may be, just to be clear. But they haven't shown it yet.

It's all about the will power of government and official we saw delay in tejas mk2 if they willing to do fast then they can.
We saw the satellite program for surveillance purpose which are proposed to be a 4years duration but after ind- pak conflict it duration cut short and given time only 1 year .
And I am very sad when I hear you give more opportunity to foreign players.
When stryker are not up to the mark why you give them 1st chance and even after failure you give second chance, all indian know very well why you do so.😢
You don't make agreement with japan for 6th gen fighter jets for development and indiginous manufacturing but you make deal of 63,000 Crores with france for Rafel M even when dassault aviation did not share operational Code of our 36 rafel to make them fully functional. Why you make that deal with france ohhh year excuse is operational need for our navy yes it's needed but you know that complete codes needed to make completely functional previous rafel .......
Yes we know all politicians and officials need but entire nation request you please utilise fairly defence budget because our country enemy is China also .

Going for an imported equipment when we had an indigenous option, that too from a country (Canada) which harbours Khalistani terrorists in the initial stages itself, shows the hunger for importing and the commission system which has not yet gone from the ecosystem even now. Anyways, it's good that these decision-making goons have dropped the idea of importing and are considering indigenous options when we have one.

Bro if You think we deal inferior quality arms due to blackmailing of US for trade and if you have fear about that then thinks like if US tells us fight with china nighter I will stop trade , buy F -35 nighter stop trade so please no excuse for such things
If US Stop trade with india then india might be take china side and that's what US never afford to do so
So just chill
It's only due to corruption they make deal....

WhAP is a much better option. Why we need imported option when we have such a capable option. I strongly believe India should go for WhAP.

WhAp is a failed platform with poor quality. Stryker is the best platform. Even the US is planning to phase them out.
