Indian Auto Giant Bharat Forge Pivots to AI-Driven Defence Technologies

In a strategic shift, Indian multinational automotive forging company Bharat Forge is focusing heavily on developing an AI-driven defence division. Under the leadership of Chairman and Managing Director Baba Kalyani, the company seeks to become a leader in defence innovation, contributing to India's push for self-reliance in the sector.

Bharat Forge has invested heavily in research and development since 2011, aiming to create high-tech military systems. "We are not just doing R&D, we are pioneering it," Kalyani asserts. From artillery systems to anti-tank missiles and ammunition, the company is heavily incorporating artificial intelligence and digitalization into its defence products.

Kalyani highlights their advancements with the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), describing it as "the first digital gun that is almost software-driven." Bharat Forge is even collaborating with up to five AI startups to remain at the forefront of defence technology.

While primarily focused on exports currently, Bharat Forge hopes to secure large domestic orders. The company has already exported ATAGS systems and mounted guns and is seeing high demand for its ammunition and anti-tank missiles.

Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited (KSSL), Bharat Forge's defence subsidiary, boasts a wide range of land, air, and naval defence products. With a focus on domestic production in line with India's Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign, KSSL places AI and digitization of defence systems at its core.

Bharat Forge's bold move into AI-driven defence highlights India's growing ambition to become a global player in defence manufacturing and exports. The company's investments and innovative approach position it as a significant contributor to the nation's self-reliance goals.
