Indian BMP-2 IFVs Get Anti-Tank Boost with 3rd Gen ATGM Integration

In a move to bolster its ground combat capabilities, the Indian Army has unveiled an upgraded version of its BMP-2 Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs), featuring a significant firepower enhancement: the integration of a 3rd Generation Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) system. This upgrade, designed in-house, showcases the Indian Army’s growing capacity for indigenous innovation.

While a twin-launcher ATGM configuration has also been developed and will be deployed in the interim, the upgraded BMP-2s now sport a single-launcher 3rd Gen ATGM, dramatically improving their anti-tank capabilities. This modification ensures these IFVs remain a potent force on the battlefield.

The comprehensive upgrade program also includes a contract with Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL) signed in March 2024. AVNL, a Chennai-based state-owned company, has been tasked with upgrading 693 BMP-2/2K vehicles, incorporating night fighting capabilities and a sophisticated Fire Control System (FCS) developed in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

Other key upgrades include integration of advanced sighting systems and Fire Control Systems (FCS) developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). These systems provide the BMP-2 with night fighting capabilities, allowing it to operate effectively in low-light conditions. The new FCS also improves targeting accuracy and engagement speed, making the BMP-2 a more efficient fighting machine.

Additionally, the BMP-2s are being equipped with see-through armor, providing the crew with better situational awareness and protection. The upgrades also include systems to detect and counter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), a growing threat in modern warfare.

The Ordnance Factory Medak has been entrusted with the task of upgrading a total of 693 BMP-2 vehicles. This comprehensive modernization program not only boosts the BMP-2's combat capabilities but also ensures these vehicles remain a formidable asset in the Indian Army's arsenal for years to come.

This might sound like a stupid idea, but after following ukraine war closely for 2 years and other wars like ngorno karabakh war, etc i feel that armored vehicles should just focus on being armored vehicles. No weapons, only focus on surviving. Just 1 driver, rest troops for transport.

these things are so so vulnerable to stuff from air (drones, loitering munitions, ATGM, etc) and ground (mines and artillery) that most of these dont even get to fire at anything before getting destroyed.

instead of making effort on weaponising these things, we should put effort other kinds of weapons(drones, LM, AH, mines, GH)

putting so much effort like putting targeting system, night vision system, a rotating turret, a LM launcher, ATGM launcher, and then few tiny drones strike end up destroying it before it gets a chance to use its weapons.

So many better features to fight two front wars.
India should upgrade/convert/manufacture as many as possible to get ready for war.

Remember most of the tanks, APCs, IFVs, WhAPs, etc are vulnerable to Drone and UAV attacks, including American Stryker, M2 Bradley IFVs, etc
So keep producing more of them to get ready for war.

UAV have made any battle worthy vehicle very vulnerable. Hence its survival is more important than weapons.

We should have two types of IFV, German IFV for Western borders and Stryker wheeled and tracked IFV for Himalayan region !

Just compare to Stryker FICV MPATGM system and see the HUGE difference in quality and potency next...

Cannot withstand a UAV attack
Absolutely NO any FRCV FICV mbt tank or BMP made anywhere in the whole world, can withstand top attack dude. Ordinary 155mm artillery fire is sufficient to kill even M1A1 Abrahms tank too! Armoured vehicles are absolutely needed for Army to reduce severe casualities in battlefields. BUT however, they will be defeated in combat same as world's greatest Merkerva tanks are being destroyed by Hezbollah's latest invention of double MPATGM rocket missile firing gadgets.. Russia uses heavy concentrations of 155mm arty guns firings to destroy Ukraine's western "gifted" tanks...

Ukrainians love their auto cannon armed BTR-3/4 and BMPs and the Bradleys even more, Russians also say their BMP-2s with auto cannon are the best weapons for fires support due to the suppressive fire they provide. Removing firepower of the IFVs and APCs is stupid it's like we should remove all the missiles from planes because SAMs will shoot them down we need only flares and other counter measures. Karabakh showed a skewed picture because the Karabakh and Armenian forces had older SAM systems and Armenians didn't fully commit with their small air force , same thing in the original northern russian offensive when their IADS was not deployed properly, now look the Bayraktars have all been shotdown and can't fly closer than 50km and are used only for ISR role with their optics and not in strike role. Right now the main problem is the cheap and tiny FPV drones and everyone is trying to develop counters for them, they can be shot down by a soldier with rifle or shotgun when detected but the problem is they are difficult to spot and fast giving little time especially at night

Nobody with right mind will right mind will get into a tank of any make if there is a grave danger of flying ammunition, top attack UCAVs and other abundance of missiles and rockets.

Purpose of BMP and BTR etc is troop transport. If you want to compare them to planes then you should compare them to transport aircraft. We dont put missiles or minigun or cannons on transport aircraft. That is because they wont survive in contested airspace to fire those missiles.

Fighter aircrafts are designed for fighting. They cant transport troops.
