India's Mechanized Infantry Modernization Gains Momentum: RFP for 500+ ICVs in Advanced Stages

The Indian Army is on the cusp of a major modernization effort for its mechanized infantry, with preparations for a Request for Proposal (RFP) for over 500 Infantry Combat Vehicles (ICVs) in advanced stages.

The move aims to enhance the army's capabilities in high-altitude areas, deserts, and amphibious terrains, replacing nearly 10 battalions of existing vehicles.

In response to an earlier Request for Information (RFI), 15 Indian vendors expressed interest, but some issues raised by them are still being addressed.

Additionally, the Army plans to procure 105 wheeled Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) for reconnaissance and support, with an RFI for this under formulation.

Meanwhile, the US-made Stryker armoured infantry combat vehicle is being considered and will soon undergo testing and trials in India. Sources within the defense establishment indicate that talks between India and the US regarding the Stryker are in advanced stages, with the potential for a limited off-the-shelf purchase followed by joint production in India.

The Stryker's appeal lies partly in the perceived inability of Indian vendors to meet the stringent Qualitative Requirements (QRs) set by the Army.

However, its capabilities will need to be adapted to suit the challenging high-altitude terrain in areas like eastern Ladakh, where tensions with China persist.

The final decision on the ICV procurement will be made after a comprehensive evaluation of all options, balancing the need for rapid modernization with the development of indigenous capabilities.

The move to modernize the mechanized infantry represents a significant step towards enhancing India's defence preparedness and ensuring its forces are equipped with the latest technology to meet evolving security challenges.
