New Delhi - In an unprecedented move, the Israeli Embassy in New Delhi has formally requested access to the Delhi Police shooting range for the training of its security personnel.

This request, which is currently under review by the Delhi Police, comes amidst escalating tensions in West Asia and heightened security concerns around Israeli facilities in India.

The request was submitted in a letter to the security division of the Delhi Police on September 23rd. Following internal discussions, the matter has been escalated to the Delhi Police headquarters for a final decision.

While the embassy's letter did not specify the reasons for this request or the number of personnel who would utilize the facility, it is speculated that the ongoing conflict in West Asia and recent security threats have prompted this unusual move.

This is the first time an embassy has sought access to the Delhi Police shooting range, located at New Police Lines and managed by the Delhi Police Academy. A senior officer within the security establishment has indicated that the request is likely to be declined, highlighting the unique nature of the situation.

The Israeli Embassy and the Delhi Police have not issued any official statements regarding this matter.

This development comes in the wake of increased security measures around the Israeli Embassy on Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Road following two low-intensity explosions near the embassy in recent years.

The first incident occurred on January 29, 2021, coinciding with the 29th anniversary of India-Israel diplomatic relations, and the second on December 26, 2023. While no injuries were reported, both incidents remain unresolved, further raising security concerns.

Central security agencies have also issued alerts to police forces across India to enhance security at Israeli and Jewish related facilities, events, and gatherings, including Chabad houses.

The Delhi Police's decision on the Israeli Embassy's request is expected to reflect the delicate balance between diplomatic relations and national security considerations in a volatile geopolitical climate.
