Javelin Co-Production Doesn't Hinder India's MPATGM Programme

India's exploration into the joint production of the American Javelin anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) is currently under evaluation, sparked by the Indian Army's pressing need for a rapidly deployable, man-portable anti-tank weapon. This development occurs while India continues to diligently advance its indigenously developed Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) program.

One of the Javelin's most compelling features is its weight. At a total of 22.3 kg (including missile, launcher, and sights), it significantly undercuts the weight of India's MPATGM. The latter, while still in development, is estimated to weigh around 29 kg, excluding its tripod. This makes it a heavier system requiring a two-person operation, unlike the shoulder-fired Javelin.

Notwithstanding the Javelin's advantages, India is strategically adopting a two-pronged approach. The Javelin's quick availability and lighter weight position it as an ideal choice for rapid deployment, especially considering current border tensions. Concurrently, India remains committed to the development and eventual procurement of the MPATGM, which may fulfill distinct roles within the army's arsenal in the long run.

The MPATGM has been undergoing trials since 2018, but its development and user trials are anticipated to take another 2-3 years. In contrast, the Javelin is a combat-proven system with a track record in various conflicts.

Reports suggest that India is contemplating a substantial order of nearly 40,000 Javelin and MPATGM 3rd generation ATGMs in the future. This move aims to phase out the current inventory of 70,000 2nd generation ATGMs (Milan of French origin and Russian Konkurs ATGMs), which are considered outdated against modern armor. Both the Javelin and MPATGM are likely to replace these older systems within the Indian Army.

Import army has a nice way of saying bye bye to indigenous Naag ATGM & it's MANPATGM version.

First they ordered spike from Israel even after failure in Desert , now they are after Javelin.

Indian army the most corrupt branch among all 3. They need everythinng imported. Each of army leader should be reviewed for corruption.

If you get tot complely, grab it immediately. What you can buy easily and manufacture in India need not designed.
you will learn the art anyways while manufacturing.
however what u were designing should be concluded.
See unless you tell the foreign OEM that you are good enough and capable to design it ,no OEM will give tot at a price you want.noe HAL is nearing HT2500 and Safran is ready to fully give tot for existing Shakti engine

Since testing for MPATGM test in mars and moon is pending better to buy the Javelin by army

We should not only make Javelin but Stinger, Hellfire, HIMARS also seeking tech from USA !

Why did India waste almost 15 years to get Javelin?
Lockheed Martin/Raytheon was willing to give license to produce them in India with 80% TOT but UPA government wanted 100% TOT.
Now is India going to buy them off the shelf at high prices?
Sheesh

Just find out how much IA planned to order Stryker fitted with Javelin and how much NAMICA IA has been ordered... You will get the picture

Sine MPATGM is few years away from tests and certification it is prudent to fill the gaps with limited imports.
40000 Javelin is not a small or limited import to fill gap.some one want to fill there pocket full by importing phorein Maal.

This missile has been under development for decades now. About time army cracks the whip and shuts down the entire program or shift it to someone else. DRDO took a decade just to reach developmental trials for MPATGM even though it’s based on Nag. Good riddance.

These are patriotic soldiers you are talking about. Every individual at DRDO should be investigated for treason because they force our armed forces to keep importing,

Exactly. You will find out how much DRDO has messed up again and caused losses to private entities who fell into their trap.

We indeed are. Every person in the military is a brave soldier.
Undoubtedly.. however the generals assigned to procurement process only are still driven by a process & philosophy of colonial era, initiating all evaluations with a negative & fault funding mindset

Why don’t they use composites or light weight high strength steel or aluminum to reduce weight, a good reason for the Import Army.

Javelin failed desert test. Why should we buy junk when we have better? Why you hate everything Indian? Shameless.

This import army will pay the price in future and one day we all will be loosing a chunk of part of India with china and Pakistan and our leaders will see it, They can't invest in desi industry or Ask Private player to join hands to reduce the weight.

Our General's and some people in ministry do not understand that these small things can change the whole scenario of the war. DRDO on other hand if facing the issues can jointly do the R&D with the Private sector even on small weapons but when you facing such issues one need to fast tract the projects. Days are not far when both pakistan and china will press India for the Twin battle. Infact the way pakistan is fingering india all the time and same practice they are employing all the time of cross border terrorism will definitely one day push india to take on pakistan one day and pakistan surly going to get big bamboo on kashmir.
