In a major development for India’s private defence manufacturing sector, Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd. (KSSL), a subsidiary of the Kalyani Group, has released comprehensive design details for its new Light Tank project.
The platform, engineered specifically for high-altitude warfare and rugged terrain, marks a rapid advancement in indigenous armoured vehicle technology, having moved from concept to detailed design in just one year.
Advanced Firepower and Crew Protection
The centrepiece of the new vehicle is its domestically developed 105mm main gun, reflecting KSSL’s growing expertise in artillery systems.A key design innovation is the adoption of a modern unmanned turret architecture. Unlike traditional tanks where the crew operates from the turret, this platform houses the three-person crew within a heavily armoured citadel inside the hull.
This "hull-down" configuration significantly enhances crew survivability by isolating them from ammunition storage and the exposed turret. The crew stations are described as an electronic "cockpit," featuring fully digitalised fire-control, navigation, and battlefield management systems.
This integration aims to reduce physical strain on the crew while maximizing situational awareness through external cameras and sensors.
Mobility and Terrain Adaptability
To ensure superior performance in the oxygen-depleted environments of the Himalayas, the tank is powered by a Caterpillar C13-series diesel engine.This is coupled with a RENK automatic transmission, reportedly of the HSWL 256 class, ensuring robust power delivery on steep gradients.
The vehicle moves on a composite rubber track system, likely sourced from Soucy.
This choice offers distinct advantages over traditional steel tracks, including a substantial reduction in overall weight, lower vibration levels, and a reduced acoustic signature—critical factors for stealth operations in mountainous border regions.
Amphibious Capabilities and Strategic Fit
Weighing in at approximately 25 tonnes, the platform is light enough for rapid air transport while retaining the firepower of a full-calibre tank.A standout feature is its amphibious capability, allowing it to cross rivers and water obstacles without time-consuming preparation.
This flexibility is essential for operations in riverine valleys and marshy sectors often found in potential conflict zones along India's northern and eastern borders.
Timeline and Industry Impact
KSSL has confirmed that the prototype is on track for an official rollout in March 2026.Following the rollout, rigorous field trials are scheduled to commence in September. These tests will evaluate the tank's mobility, firing accuracy, and endurance under real-world operational conditions.
This project positions KSSL as a direct competitor in the light tank segment, a category that has gained urgency for the Indian Army following recent border standoffs.
The platform is expected to compete with the DRDO-L&T ‘Zorawar’ light tank, offering the military a choice between two indigenous solutions.
