L&T Drives K9 Vajra Artillery Program to 82% Local Content, Strengthening Domestic Supply Chains

India’s premier self-propelled artillery initiative has crossed a significant threshold, with the 155mm/52-caliber K9 Vajra-T tracked howitzer now boasting over 82 percent indigenous content at the work package level.

Spearheaded by Larsen & Toubro (L&T), this progress highlights the rapidly expanding capabilities of India’s domestic defence manufacturing sector in producing highly advanced military equipment.

This milestone signifies a smooth shift from simply assembling licensed designs to deeply embedding local parts, subsystems, and manufacturing networks within the country.

Originally launched through a technological partnership with South Korea’s Hanwha Defense, the program has evolved tremendously. L&T has steadily increased the use of homegrown components over time.

Current data confirms that more than four out of every five work packages for these weapon systems are now produced or procured directly from Indian sources.

This localization effort follows the successful delivery of the initial 100 units in 2021 and aligns perfectly with the Ministry of Defence's recent approval to procure an additional 100 howitzers.

The locally sourced elements include vital systems such as electronics, hydraulics, structural frames, and mechanical parts. These are manufactured through a vast network of domestic suppliers.

This push for indigenisation not only lowers the nation's reliance on foreign imports but also creates a more secure, resilient supply chain and improves overall cost-effectiveness.

The broader success of the Vajra initiative is rooted in the establishment of a strong foundation of local suppliers.

L&T has actively partnered with numerous Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and other industrial entities across India.

Together, they are producing high-precision components that strictly adhere to rigorous military quality standards, a collaborative effort expected to generate millions of man-days of employment in the coming years.

By fostering this industrial ecosystem, the project has established enduring manufacturing capabilities that go far beyond just one weapon system.

The expertise and infrastructure developed here will be highly beneficial for the future design and production of other armoured vehicles, artillery guns, and various defence projects, ultimately fortifying the nation's industrial backbone.

Finally, the K9 Vajra-T has strongly demonstrated its combat readiness and efficiency with the Indian Army.

While originally intended for desert operations, it has performed exceptionally well in high-altitude environments, including the extreme sub-zero conditions of Eastern Ladakh.

Equipped with specialized winterization kits, its impressive firepower featuring a 40-kilometer strike range, alongside its high mobility, have cemented its role as a crucial pillar in the ongoing modernization of India's artillery forces.
