The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with. Rosoboronexport (RoE), Russian Federation worth $ 248 million for procurement of 1000 HP Engines for T-72 Tanks in fully formed, completely knocked down and semi knocked down conditions.

The deal also includes Transfer of Technology (ToT) from M/s RoE to M/s Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (Heavy Vehicle Factory), Avadi, Chennai, for integration and subsequent licensed production of engines under ToT to boost the “Make in India’ initiative in Defence Sector.

T-72 is the mainstay of tank fleet of the Indian Army which is at present fitted with 780 HP Engine. Equipping the existing fleet of T-72 Tanks with 1000 HP Engine will enhance the battle field mobility and offensive capability of Indian Army.

Professionalism is rearing its head everywhere in India. Marketing needs to be brought in to increase the generation of money earned in such ventures. Sooner rather than later engine development and design will also pick up in the country. Welding machining and technical skills courses could be freely provided to anyone. This is an asset for the whole nation.

India has had these tanks since the 70s and they haven't even reversed engineered the engine and built their own with better performance? It would take China no more than 1 yr.

Leadership still lacking. Intelligence still waiting for someone else to identify shortfalls. But brilliance in putting others down is the national trademark.

I hate criticizing India but India misses out on so many opportunities that they may have set a world record. They don't seem to have a long term vision. It's all short term election politics. Like what Trump is doing to the US now.

The US had overdone it. India didn't have the misfortune of reaching that much decadence somehow muddling through has brought us here where others assume that we are still backwards. That's a dangerous thing for others to assume.

India needs to empower its people and companies. Stop this crony capitalism where the biggest companies get all the contracts. I am Indian born 60 years ago in Canada. I have brought major investors to India in the mining space. At the end of the day, after spending 10s of millions, walked away. There was always a babu who would not stamp a simple permit without a bribe. Unfortunately, it a fact. Both projects are now owned for no cost by Indian crony supporters of the current government. Other problem is the caste system, my own Indian employees would not work or eat with people below their caste. Being a Sikh, its foreign to me. It was always a problem with our staff. Hard to get out from being a developing country status when the majority of the population is being crushed on a daily basis. I am only saying this because it's my experience. New immigrants from India who come with engineering degrees do not want to go on the shop floor because they think it is beneath them. I can just imagine the people who work for HAL. It explains why it takes decades to get anything done.
