Mounting Terror Attacks in Jammu Since Last 4 Years Raise Security Concerns

Jammu region is witnessing a significant escalation in terror attacks and counter-insurgency operations, leaving a trail of death and fear in its wake. Over the past four years, the region has experienced a surge in violence, with recent events underscoring the growing threat to both civilians and security personnel.

In the latest incidents, a CRPF constable lost his life during a counter-insurgency operation in Kathua, and five Indian Army troopers were injured in a militant attack in Doda district. Earlier this week, a devastating attack on a pilgrim bus claimed the lives of nine civilians and left dozens injured.

The upswing in violence began in 2021 with the discovery of sticky bombs and a drone attack on the Indian Air Force base in Jammu. Since then, the region has witnessed a series of infiltrations by terrorists through the Pir Panjal Valley, triggering counter-terror operations by security forces.

The human cost of this escalating conflict is alarming. Government data reveals that 35 civilians have been killed in security force actions and encounters since 2018, while a staggering 174 civilians have lost their lives in terrorist attacks during the same period.

Moreover, central agencies have identified a disturbing pattern of seven identical attacks on security forces in the past two years, resulting in the deaths of over two dozen soldiers and officers.

The situation is further complicated by the presence of over 100 active militants in the region, with a majority being foreign terrorists. This poses a significant challenge to security forces and underscores the need for enhanced counter-terrorism measures.

The rising violence in Jammu not only threatens the lives and safety of residents but also has broader implications for regional stability and security. The South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP) has documented a notable increase in terrorist activities across Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting the need for a comprehensive and coordinated response to address the root causes of terrorism and ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens.
