New Op Sindoor Account Reveals How S-400 Operators Handled High-Stakes Pakistani Intrusions Under The Night Sky

A recently published account has provided an unprecedented look into the intense, high-stakes environment inside an Indian air defence command centre during Operation Sindoor in May 2025.

While much of the conflict’s public focus has been on aerial dogfights and cross-border kinetic strikes, the newly revealed details highlight the crucial role of the ground-based operators who manned the formidable S-400 missile systems to shield Indian airspace from Pakistani retaliation.

According to veteran journalist Vishnu Som’s newly released book, The Sky Warriors: Operation Sindoor Unveiled, one of the most critical moments of the 88-hour war involved a young Wing Commander serving in Group Captain Animesh Patni’s S-400 regiment.

As Pakistani aircraft and missiles attempted to probe and breach Indian territory, the operator faced the immense pressure of executing a counter-strike.

Seeking final clearance in a highly charged atmosphere, the Wing Commander requested, “Sir, confirm fire.” Upon receiving a firm “Affirm. You are cleared to launch,” a towering 25-foot S-400 interceptor missile was fired, accelerating to hypersonic speeds into the night sky.

The narrative describes the sheer force of the launch, which violently shook the ground below.

High above, the targeted Pakistani fighter jet desperately attempted evasive manoeuvres, frantically deploying countermeasures like chaff and flares to break the lock.

However, the S-400’s highly advanced radar and tracking systems proved impossible to shake. A massive explosion illuminated the dark sky, followed by confirmation of a successful hit as the enemy aircraft vanished from radar screens.

The intense, clinical focus inside the control room instantly gave way to cheers and patriotic chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai!” from the Indian personnel.

This interception was part of a broader, highly successful deployment of India’s layered air defence network.

Operation Sindoor, which took place between May 6 and May 10, 2025, was initiated by India following the tragic April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 civilians.

In response, Indian forces executed precision strikes against multiple terror launchpads deep inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied territory.

When the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) attempted to retaliate using fighters, drones, and missiles, Indian indigenous systems like Akash, integrated seamlessly alongside the S-400, created an impenetrable shield.

Open-source military assessments confirm the S-400’s game-changing impact during the operation.

Notably, the PAF launched an estimated 60 CM-400AKG supersonic anti-radiation missiles at Indian S-400 complexes, including the vital installation at Adampur airbase, in a desperate bid to neutralise the surface-to-air threat.

Flying at speeds up to Mach 5, these suppression missions completely failed to find their marks. Despite initial Pakistani propaganda claiming damage to Indian air defence systems, independent verifications and a lack of satellite evidence thoroughly debunked these assertions.

The severe degradation of PAF capabilities and infrastructure eventually forced Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations to request a ceasefire on May 10.

Beyond the technical marvel of long-range intercepts and network-centric warfare, these accounts underscore the human element of modern combat.

The flawless performance of the S-400 was a direct result of the calm professionalism, split-second decision-making, and rigorous training of the commanders and operators working under extreme duress.

As India continuously modernises its military capabilities, the story of the S-400 crews during Operation Sindoor serves as a powerful reminder of the nation's robust deterrence.

The successful defence of Indian skies not only neutralised enemy threats but also highlighted the unwavering resolve of the personnel who stand guard to protect the country.
