NIA Files Charges Against Two in Manipur Car Bomb Blast

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a charge sheet against two individuals accused of involvement in a car bomb blast that occurred last year in Manipur. Three people were injured in the explosion.

The charge sheet, filed with a special NIA court in Bishnupur, Manipur, includes the key conspirator, Seiminlun Gangte (alias Minlun). The other accused is Mohammed Noor Hussain (alias Tomba, alias Mohammed Nur Hasan).

Details of the Blast

The explosion took place on June 21, 2023, on a bridge near Kwakta in Bishnupur. A bomb planted in a Mahindra Scorpio caused damage to the bridge, an electric pole, and nearby houses.

The NIA alleges that Hussain drove the vehicle containing the bomb, while another person triggered the detonation. Gangte is accused of organizing the attack with the intent to cause terror and disrupt the movement of security forces and civilians.

Charges and Investigation

The two accused face charges under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Explosive Substances Act 1908 and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984.

The NIA's investigation is ongoing, with efforts underway to locate additional suspects involved in the attack.

Context of Ethnic Strife

This incident occurred within a broader backdrop of ethnic conflict in Manipur. Since May 2023, tensions between the Meitei community and other groups have escalated, with at least 219 people killed in the violence.
