In response to a concerning surge in terror attacks in the Jammu region this year, the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has established a permanent National Security Guard (NSG) hub in Jammu city. This strategic move aims to bolster security and ensure a swift response to any major terrorist incident in the region.
The Jammu region has experienced a significant increase in terrorist activity this year, resulting in the deaths of 16 security personnel, 10 civilians, and 3 village defence guards. While security forces have successfully neutralized 13 terrorists, the escalating threat environment necessitates a more proactive and rapid response capability.
The newly established NSG hub will house a dedicated contingent of around 20 highly trained commandos drawn from the army, police, and paramilitary forces. These elite forces are equipped to handle a wide range of counter-terrorism operations, including anti-hijacking, anti-kidnapping, anti-sabotage, and hostage rescue missions. They will work closely with the special operations group of the Jammu and Kashmir Police to enhance counter-terrorism efforts in the region.
Previously, NSG commandos had to be airlifted from either Chandigarh or New Delhi in response to terror attacks in Jammu, leading to significant delays in deployment. The permanent hub in Jammu eliminates this logistical hurdle, enabling a much faster response time to any emerging threat. This rapid response capability is crucial for effectively neutralizing terrorist threats and minimizing casualties.
The NSG's presence in Jammu is expected to significantly enhance the region's security apparatus. The commandos' expertise and specialized training will complement the efforts of existing security forces, providing a more robust and layered defence against terrorism. This move reflects the government's commitment to safeguarding the Jammu region and ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
