One Indian Crew Member Released from Seized Cargo Ship, Returns Home

New Delhi – Ann Tessa Joseph, a deck cadet from Kerala, has safely returned to India after being detained onboard an Israel-linked cargo ship seized by Iran on April 13th. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed her arrival at Cochin International Airport on Thursday, where she was received by the Regional Passport Officer.

Joseph's release follows diplomatic efforts spearheaded by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who spoke directly with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, to secure the release of the 17 Indian crew members.

"We are relieved by Ms. Joseph's return and grateful for the cooperation of both the Indian Mission in Tehran and the Iranian Government in ensuring her safe passage," an MEA statement read.

The remaining 16 crew members remain under Iranian control, but the MEA reports they are in good health and remain in contact with their families. The Indian Mission in Tehran is committed to ensuring their well-being and working with Iranian authorities for a swift resolution.

The cargo ship, MSC Aries, was seized by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy near the Strait of Hormuz, prompting concern for the detained Indian nationals. Minister Jaishankar has also engaged in broader discussions with Iran regarding tensions in the region.
