Pakistan's hopes of joining the influential BRICS economic group have hit a snag. Member nations are struggling to reach a consensus on Islamabad's bid, with Russia raising concerns about Pakistan's economic stability and the need for unanimous approval.
Pakistan has long desired to join BRICS, a group comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The alliance promotes economic collaboration amongst major emerging economies. BRICS has recently expanded, adding six new members – UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and Argentina. However, Argentina's subsequent withdrawal leaves the total membership at 10.
Islamabad sees the group's growing influence as an opportunity to bolster its standing on the global stage, especially as a voice for the "Global South." Yet, Russia's reservations about Pakistan's economic health and the requirement for approval from all members create considerable obstacles.
While China, a strong Pakistani ally, seemingly supports Pakistan's inclusion, India, another major BRICS player, could pose a significant hurdle. The historically tense relationship between India and Pakistan raises the question of whether New Delhi would endorse Islamabad's bid.
In the face of uncertain prospects within BRICS, Pakistan may find a potential alternate path to regional integration through the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). China has reportedly backed Pakistan's bid to join the SCO, although the criteria for membership between the two organizations differ.
Analysts Weigh In
"Pakistan's economic woes are a legitimate concern for Russia and potentially other BRICS members," says a International Relations analyst based in Karachi. "However, China's support could be a significant factor. The final decision hinges on a balance between economic considerations and the geopolitical interests of individual members."The stalled bid highlights the intricate power dynamics within BRICS and the complexities of Pakistan's efforts to strengthen its position within influential multilateral forums.
