A recently analyzed photograph has confirmed long-held suspicions that Pakistan's JF-17 Thunder fighter jets are now equipped to carry tactical nuclear missiles.

This development, verified by the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), marks a significant shift in the region's nuclear balance.

The RA'AD Missile: Pakistan's Nuclear Ace

The photograph reveals the JF-17 equipped with the RA'AD I, Pakistan's sole nuclear-capable Air-Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM). This missile, first tested in 2007, is designed for both conventional and nuclear missions.

Previously, Pakistan relied on aging Mirage III/V aircraft for its air-based nuclear deterrence. The JF-17's new role signifies a modernization of this capability.

Phasing Out the Mirage: JF-17 Takes Center Stage

Pakistan is actively phasing out its outdated Mirage fleet, positioning the JF-17 as the cornerstone of its air-nuclear defense. The initial glimpse of a nuclear-capable JF-17 came during the 2023 Pakistan Day Parade rehearsals.

Further analysis of purchased photographs by FAS confirmed the presence of the RAAD missile and its nuclear capabilities.

Evolving Missile Technology: RAAD-II

Design discrepancies between older RAAD images and the ALCM in the new photographs suggest that Pakistan is not only deploying existing missiles but is also actively developing an upgraded RAAD-II.

While details about this new model are scarce, its existence underscores Pakistan's commitment to refining its nuclear arsenal.

JF-17 Thunder: A Technical Overview

The JF-17 Thunder, co-developed by China and Pakistan, is a lightweight, single-engine fighter jet known for its versatility. Its advanced avionics, including a KLJ-7 X-band radar and multiple display screens, enhance its combat effectiveness.

The jet's armaments include air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles, unguided bombs, and a 23mm cannon.

India-Pakistan Nuclear Rivalry Intensifies

This development occurs within the context of an escalating nuclear arms race between India and Pakistan. India's successful test of multiple re-entry vehicles for its Agni missiles has spurred Pakistan to develop the Ababeel missile.

Both nations are striving to expand their missile ranges and modernize their nuclear capabilities.

India's nuclear strategy appears to be evolving, with a potential shift towards storing nuclear warheads and their delivery systems together, even during peacetime.

This change, indicated by the use of canisterized missiles and nuclear submarines, signals a more proactive stance.
