Pentagon Strongly Advocates for India's F-35 Acquisition to Bolster QUAD's Strategic Deterrence Against China as Other Members Already Operates Them

The U.S. Department of Defense (the Pentagon) is actively encouraging India to acquire the F-35A Lightning II fighter jet.

This move is seen as a significant step toward strengthening the collective defence capabilities of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), a strategic alliance between the United States, India, Japan, and Australia, particularly in response to growing concerns about China's military expansion in the Indo-Pacific region.

The F-35A, produced by Lockheed Martin, is a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet. It is designed to excel in a variety of roles, including achieving air superiority, conducting strike missions, and gathering intelligence. It represents a crucial element of modern military operations.

Currently, India is the only Quad member that does not operate the F-35 or any other U.S.-manufactured fighter jets. Integrating India into the F-35 program would greatly improve the ability of Quad forces to operate together, especially in a potential conflict with China.

A key advantage of allied forces using the same advanced equipment is the ability to communicate, share data, and coordinate electronic warfare tactics effectively.

The F-35 is equipped with a highly sophisticated communication system that enables real-time information sharing. This is critical for executing coordinated strategies against a technologically advanced adversary like China.

Beyond enhancing operational capabilities, India's possession of the F-35 would act as a powerful deterrent. The presence of these advanced fighter jets in India's Air Force could discourage China from engaging in aggressive military actions, as any conflict would involve facing one of the most capable fighter aircraft in the world.

The F-35A's stealth technology, combined with its ability to perform multiple roles, would provide a significant advantage in contested airspace, including scenarios involving Taiwan or along the disputed India-China border.

However, India's existing military procurement relationship with Russia, including the recent acquisition of the S-400 missile defence system, presents a potential challenge. The United States has voiced concerns regarding the potential for technology compromise if American stealth technology is integrated with Russian military systems.

As a member of the Quad, India's military strength is directly linked to the group's overall security posture. The fact that India currently does not operate any U.S.-made fighter jets presents certain limitations to joint military exercises and operations.

The F-35A could bridge this gap, boosting India's military power while also creating a more unified and powerful deterrent against regional threats by bringing the Quad's military capabilities closer together.

Australia and Japan, other members of the Quad, fields F-35As. South Korea, while not a member of the Quad, is a regional US ally, and also operates F-35.
