Pentagon Strongly Advocates for India's F-35 Acquisition to Bolster QUAD's Strategic Deterrence Against China as Other Members Already Operates Them

The U.S. Department of Defense (the Pentagon) is actively encouraging India to acquire the F-35A Lightning II fighter jet.

This move is seen as a significant step toward strengthening the collective defence capabilities of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), a strategic alliance between the United States, India, Japan, and Australia, particularly in response to growing concerns about China's military expansion in the Indo-Pacific region.

The F-35A, produced by Lockheed Martin, is a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet. It is designed to excel in a variety of roles, including achieving air superiority, conducting strike missions, and gathering intelligence. It represents a crucial element of modern military operations.

Currently, India is the only Quad member that does not operate the F-35 or any other U.S.-manufactured fighter jets. Integrating India into the F-35 program would greatly improve the ability of Quad forces to operate together, especially in a potential conflict with China.

A key advantage of allied forces using the same advanced equipment is the ability to communicate, share data, and coordinate electronic warfare tactics effectively.

The F-35 is equipped with a highly sophisticated communication system that enables real-time information sharing. This is critical for executing coordinated strategies against a technologically advanced adversary like China.

Beyond enhancing operational capabilities, India's possession of the F-35 would act as a powerful deterrent. The presence of these advanced fighter jets in India's Air Force could discourage China from engaging in aggressive military actions, as any conflict would involve facing one of the most capable fighter aircraft in the world.

The F-35A's stealth technology, combined with its ability to perform multiple roles, would provide a significant advantage in contested airspace, including scenarios involving Taiwan or along the disputed India-China border.

However, India's existing military procurement relationship with Russia, including the recent acquisition of the S-400 missile defence system, presents a potential challenge. The United States has voiced concerns regarding the potential for technology compromise if American stealth technology is integrated with Russian military systems.

As a member of the Quad, India's military strength is directly linked to the group's overall security posture. The fact that India currently does not operate any U.S.-made fighter jets presents certain limitations to joint military exercises and operations.

The F-35A could bridge this gap, boosting India's military power while also creating a more unified and powerful deterrent against regional threats by bringing the Quad's military capabilities closer together.

Australia and Japan, other members of the Quad, fields F-35As. South Korea, while not a member of the Quad, is a regional US ally, and also operates F-35.

The Pentagon wants to sell India jets at retail prices so they can buy the jets at wholesale prices at a 50% discount for themselves.

F-35 will be controlled by US, as F-35 is depended more on software. OEM LM will have total control on F-35 all over the world. Will US/LM allow free hand operation of this F-35......................???, Second, integrating of Indigenous & Third party weapons are almost impossible on it. Only US weapons & sensors will be allowed, so F-35 will not be connected with other defence systems. Overall use or effectiveness will be minimal. Bharat will not get autonomy of operation & Integration of weapons/sensors & customized variant of F-35. A surgical strike like Balakot operation will need US approval. Without permission, US will stop supply spares/components, weapons & software control over F-35 because this fighter is more based on software, & lastly, more important part is Life cycle cost will be very high with limited USE. Instead, alternate option would be more better with Autonomy in operation plus weapon sensors integration. Recently, F-35 have been integrated with GaN based AESA Radar on it.

Despite all limitations of F35 it's better to have warrior horses in arsenal than sitting ducks.

Thanks to HAL, if the experience with Tejas Mk-1 were any indication of things to come, AMCA is for all intent and purpose, pretty much a dead platform.
If one has to choose between Su-57 and F-35, then the latter is obviously a much evolved and capable platform.

F-35 is 1000 times better than Su-57. India needs US. Geopolitics is also there. Right now, Russia is totally dependent on China. But if India really wants F-35, then they have to sign a deal as soon as possible, maybe by year-end, because the F-35 order book is huge. India has to increase its defence budget. India has to buy and build simultaneously. AMCA should be put on 1st priority than any other defence programs. I will say nuclear submarines and AMCA both should be monitored by PMO.

Before going for these fighters, India should get a complete, fool-proof guarantee that in case of a conflict with Pakistan or China, the US will extend full operational support for the smooth functioning of these fighters. A simple commitment without any concrete guarantee won't work, since we all know how the US ditched its commitment for the non-expansion of the NATO alliance despite the commitment given to Gorbachev and Russia/USSR.

However, our best national interest can only be served by the speedy development and deployment of the AMCA project.
The rest should be just stop-gap arrangements.
Moreover, we should not be pushed into any bogus US conflicts after purchasing these fighters, since we all know the lame pretext the US gave when they chose to invade Saddam Hussain's Iraq.

F-35 will be a big headache for IAF to manage due to various restrictions by the USA. If the USA is so serious, it can keep a squadron or two of F-35s at some Indian base and allow the IAF to operate them or operate on its own. In fact, why not offer St. Martin's to the USA for F-35s and nothing else?

We can get the F-35 only if it is 100% open source, with the ability to change the mission computer. Else, forget it. We are capable of taking care of China on our own. We don't need the Pentagon alliance for that. The US needs to demonstrate that they are willing to put boots on the ground. We are not Ukraine, to get suckered into their war.

It is obvious India doesn't require Rafale. We need to have only 5th gen fighters. We should avoid buying weapons from countries like France. There is no use for India. We should go with USA and Russia.

India is in a tricky situation now. The USA will be very angry if India doesn't buy any US aircraft, even when the US offers the F-35A. India should buy 40 of them, I believe. It will help them in two ways. The USA will cooperate; India will have stealth aircraft to fill the gap until its AMCA is ready; and India can go with the Su-57 too. HAL can make the Su-57 at their Su-30 factory. Russia will transfer the technology. For the F-35, India must convince the USA that they get a free hand while using it against Pakistan and China.

This seems to be the ultimate solution, though the numbers may vary as per your budget. Actually, we are caught between the devil and the deep sea because of our own pathological, lethargic approach towards our defence preparedness.

Yeah... getting both the Su-57 and the F-35 isn't going to happen. It will be one or the other, or neither.

Did both countries tell you it is not going to happen? Whether they are buying F-35s or not, they will definitely buy SU-57s.

India should go with 55 Eurofighter Typhoon and 55 Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter jets in the MMRCA jet deal.

The F-35 fighter jet has big issues with its problematic jet engine.

India will not get any kind of transfer of technology for the F-35 and will depend only on US weapons for the F-35.

We should remember GE stopped the F404 jet engine supply for Tejas fighter jet production.

HAL should buy more F404 jet engines from the Samsung Techwin company for more fighter jet production.

This is the best idea 💡 for the growth of Tejas fighter jet production.

If China and Pakistan's air force attack India, then the US will not help the IAF in the future.

India should start production of the AMCA with the Russian AL-41F1S jet engine.

The government should give more money for the development of the Kaveri jet engine to be self-reliant on jet engine technology.

IF US offer F-35 JSF and F-35B without restriction and with made in India critical spare parts we must buy them better make them in India under MRFA ! For strengthening QUAD India also need US SSN and SSBN tech !

Let's keep an open mind and induct the F-35 in limited numbers, likely 2 or 4 squadrons.

Are you talking about establishing an American airbase in India near St. Martin's Island?

Focus on Tejas and make it a great success. Only a successful product builds trust in Indian products. Turkey and South Korea are doing this. They focus only on one aircraft. India bets on four half-finished products, which nobody will want.

Are you talking about establishing an American airbase in India near St. Martin's Island?
Yes. Instead of offering any Indian territory, St. Martin's would be a good choice for the USA. But we should allow it only for the F-35 and nothing else, so that it is not used as a general-purpose American base.
