Philippine Delegation Assesses India's ALH-Dhruv Helicopter for Potential Acquisition

In a move that signals potential strengthening of defense ties, a high-level delegation from the Philippines recently embarked on a unique mission: to explore the capabilities of India's indigenously developed ALH-Dhruv helicopter. The delegation, comprising officials from the Philippine Navy, Philippine Coast Guard, and Department of National Defense, visited the Indian Navy ship INS Shakti to get a firsthand look at the Dhruv in action.

This visit represents a significant step in ongoing discussions between India and the Philippines regarding the possible acquisition of Dhruv helicopters by the Southeast Asian nation. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the Indian manufacturer of the Dhruv, has already offered the versatile aircraft to both the Philippine Army and Air Force.

During their time on INS Shakti, the Philippine delegation received detailed briefings on the Dhruv's technical specifications, operational features, and potential applications within the Philippine military and coast guard context. They also witnessed firsthand demonstrations of the helicopter's capabilities.

This experience could prove invaluable for the Philippines as they evaluate their options for acquiring new helicopters to meet their diverse needs, including maritime surveillance, search and rescue, transport, and medical evacuation. The Dhruv, with its proven track record and adaptability, could be a strong contender in this evaluation.

While the Philippines' final decision remains to be seen, this exploration of the ALH-Dhruv's capabilities marks a positive development in the growing defense cooperation between India and the Philippines. It signifies a shared interest in exploring indigenous defense solutions and fostering stronger ties in the Indo-Pacific region.

India should not repeat the same mistake. Since, India is a budding Defence market, steps need to be taken inorder to build trust among its customers, by offering:
  • Good after sale service
  • Timely delivery of components.
Our mantra should be to do outdo China.

Koreans with their Agents and Chines with their muscle power and turkey with its NATO Membership and marketing will outfox

None of that is needed. HAL is enough on its own to make sure we win no orders. Ecuador is such a fine example.
