Rafale a Strong Contender for India's MRFA Tender Due to IAF Familiarity, But US Govt Pressuring India to Choose F-16 Viper: French Media

The Indian Air Force's (IAF) quest for 114 new multi-role fighter aircraft under the Medium Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) program has intensified, with Dassault Aviation's Rafale and Lockheed Martin's F-16V Viper emerging as the key contenders.

While the Rafale appears to be favored by the IAF, reports suggest the US government is actively lobbying India to select the American fighter jet.

French online military portal Avions Legendaires suggests that the IAF's familiarity with the Rafale, gained through the operation of 36 Rafale fighter jets and the impending acquisition of 26 Rafale M for the Indian Navy, gives Dassault a significant advantage.

The portal highlights the IAF's previous rejection of the F-16 platform in the earlier Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) competition, where the F-16 Block 70 failed to meet technical requirements.

However, Lockheed Martin, rebranding the F-16V as the F-21 specifically for India, is reportedly receiving strong support from the US administration. This diplomatic pressure, as reported by Avions Legendaires, aims to sway India towards the American offering.

Cost considerations also play a crucial role. While the per-unit cost of the F-16V, based on Taiwan's recent purchase of 66 units, is estimated to be around $197 million, the Rafale's per-unit cost, based on India's 2016 deal, is approximately $244 million. However, these figures can vary based on customization, additional equipment, and negotiations.

Rafale's prospects is further supported by the recent high-profile visit of India's National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, to Paris, where he met with French President Emmanuel Macron and other top officials to discuss defence cooperation.

The MRFA competition is a critical procurement for the IAF, with the chosen aircraft set to play a crucial role in India's defense strategy for decades to come. The final decision will likely hinge on a complex interplay of technical capabilities, pricing, and geopolitical considerations. With both Dassault and Lockheed Martin vying for this lucrative contract, the competition is expected to be fierce.

It remains to be seen whether the IAF's operational experience with the Rafale or the US government's lobbying efforts will ultimately sway the decision in this high-stakes competition.

its Just formality to win Rafale is clear winner , dont want old F-16 with some cosmetic change

Competition is Good for Bharat as it will add enough pressure on other contender to give Best offer eventually it will Benefit Bharat , it will put pressure on Dassault Automatically , who were unwilling to share ToT & starting production Line in Bharat with complete Eco-system & allowing source code for Future upgrade/Indigenous or Third party weapon Integration according to own needs & without permission of OEM

Reasons F-21 might see a MRFA victory
1) only MRFA contender which has selected a partner ( Tata’s TASL) and supply chain partners for almost complete manufacture in India .
2) Cheaper price to Operate and own .
3) Lockheed’s technologies and yes making F-21 open for upgrades for years

But again F-16 is the most hated jet in India . IAF won’t go for it. Now I feel why MRFA is not progressing Govt pushing for F-21 for being cheaper , full make in India and diplomatic pressure but IAF sticking on Rafale.

But again if nothing progresses I would say get F-21 . At least something is better than nothing 😩😫🤣😅🤣😂

US can't supply anything on time due to political supply chain issues. Neither engines, nor drones, nor Apaches. What makes you think they can supply 114 fighter jets on time.

F-16 /F-21 cant even qualify for Final round fail to meet parameters.and have reached to its upgrade Limits with old design , Bharat needs Fighter jets for Next 40 to 50 years with Frequently able to upgrade with even Third party system /weapons Brahmos-NG which is being developed will b able Integrate on French platform

India is not going to purchase F21 as F16 became a commodity all over world. Every country including Pakistan has F16.
F-16 with Latest upgrade in Ukraine which falled from the sky was not able to seen again in Ukraine sky & hope it will not seen either or even if its flown it will not able to make major Impact for Ukraine against Russia so Ukraine Battle field is real evaluation for F-16

Bogus article...
IAF is all for Rafale and F21 is not going to win anything in India.
Just gas....

Rafale-M is 400 millions usd per jet dude! $161 million usd base jet price... Dassault says that F3R base price in 2014 is 102 millions usd. So, for 10 years inflations at 6% year upon year going on compounded effect makes base price for Rafale-M at 161 millions usd in 2024 year!! Therefore F4.2 will be 200 millions usd base price and total lifetime ops costs at 500 millions usd next year!!

Instead of f21 USA can offer f22/f35 I don't mind. These expensive machines are not worth. Instead we buy 100 more Tejas M1A and 250 M2.

if India buy American fighter jets. Pakistan will buy Su35 and Su75 in future.

USA already stated to India very clearly - "Handover one full S400 battery to USA and then we will give you F35A's for IAF".....

Not going to happen as 114 jets will cost over $30 billion. Poor country like India can't afford it. Base price of Rafale in nearly $170 million.
