Stockholm, Sweden – Saab, the cornerstone of Sweden's aerospace and defense industry, has been awarded a pivotal contract by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV).
This contract initiates a series of comprehensive conceptual studies that will shape the development of Sweden's future fighter aircraft, safeguarding the nation's air superiority for decades to come.
The two-year project (2024-2025) will delve into the vanguard of air combat technologies. Artificial Intelligence (AI), integration into networked warfare systems, advanced sensors, stealth capabilities, and collaboration with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will be at the forefront of the research and development effort.
The goal is to design and produce a sixth-generation fighter jet capable of replacing existing platforms, such as the Gripen and the Eurofighter, by 2035.
This initiative aligns with a wider European push for next-generation air power. Sweden, with Saab and GKN Aerospace Sweden as key players, remains actively involved in Team Tempest. This collaborative project with Italy and the United Kingdom seeks to pioneer technologies defining the future of aerial warfare.
Saab's expertise, honed through the development of the advanced Gripen E and the GlobalEye airborne surveillance platform, positions the company as the ideal driving force for this national endeavor.
The upcoming conceptual studies will illuminate the path towards a Swedish fighter jet that embodies the absolute cutting edge of aerial combat technology.
