Satellite imagery reveals that China has positioned six of its most advanced J-20 stealth fighter jets at the Shigatse dual-use airport in Tibet. This strategic location is approximately 150 kilometers from the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the de facto border between India and China, and near the sensitive Doklam region.
The deployment, confirmed by geospatial intelligence firm All Source Analysis, marks a significant move as the J-20 is China's most sophisticated operational fighter aircraft. While previously seen in other border regions like Xinjiang, this is the largest concentration of J-20s observed in Tibet to date.
The Indian Air Force (IAF), aware of the deployment, has not officially commented. However, defense officials suggest the fighters may be undergoing high-altitude trials. India counters the J-20s with its fleet of French-built Rafale fighters, some of which are currently participating in exercises with the US Air Force in Alaska. Notably, the Shigatse airport is within striking distance of Hasimara in West Bengal, where India bases a squadron of Rafales.
China's J-20, often dubbed the "Mighty Dragon," is a twin-engine stealth fighter introduced in 2017. With an estimated 250 in service, the J-20 boasts advanced sensors and is designed for air superiority, carrying long-range air-to-air missiles like the PL-15.
This deployment occurs amidst a protracted military standoff along the LAC, which has persisted for five years. Both nations have been reinforcing their military infrastructure in the border regions. China has upgraded several airfields, including Hotan, Kashgar, and Nyingchi, with new runways, hardened shelters, and storage facilities.
India has responded by enhancing its airbases and deploying advanced air defense systems, including the Russian S-400, aimed at deterring potential Chinese incursions.
Sim Tack, VP for Technology and Analysis at All Source Analysis, notes, "China has steadily built up its air power capacity in Tibet and other areas near India over the past five years." He emphasizes that this latest deployment of J-20s, along with H-6 nuclear-capable bombers, indicates a growing assertiveness in the region.
