Search for New DRDO Chief Begins as Retirement of Current Leader Approaches

India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is preparing for a change at the top. Dr. Samir V. Kamath, the current chairman, will retire on May 31st after leading the organization for nearly three years. This transition comes as DRDO faces calls for modernization and a renewed focus on developing advanced technologies for future conflicts.

A recent report, commissioned by the government and spearheaded by former advisor Prof. K. VijayRaghavan, emphasized the DRDO's need to prioritize cutting-edge defense technologies. This will require a new leader capable of steering the organization toward achieving those goals.

A screening committee has shortlisted three potential successors from within DRDO's ranks to fill Dr. Kamath's position. Each candidate brings a distinguished record of research and expertise:
  • Dr. B.K. Das: As Director General (Electronics & Communication Systems), Dr. Das holds the most senior position of the three candidates.
  • Dr. Suma Varughese: Leading the Micro Electronic Devices, Computational Systems and Cyber Systems division, Dr. Varughese works in a field increasingly central to modern warfare.
  • Dr. Ummalaneni Raja Babu: Dr. Babu's domain expertise, as head of DRDO's Missiles and Strategic Systems division, aligns with a key aspect of national defense.
The government is now in the process of selecting the individual best equipped to lead the DRDO through its upcoming transformation and ensure India's continued advancement in defense technology.
