SSS Defence's P-72 Rifle Aims to Secure Indian Paramilitary Contracts

SSS Defence, a domestic Indian firearms manufacturer, has set its sights on the lucrative Indian paramilitary market with its newly developed P-72 assault rifle. Chambered in the ubiquitous 7.62x39mm caliber, the P-72 is designed to address the specific needs and challenges faced by India's paramilitary forces.

The rifle features a select-fire mechanism, enabling both semi-automatic and fully automatic firing modes, providing operators with flexibility in various combat scenarios. The short-stroke piston operating system, known for its reliability and reduced recoil, enhances the P-72's performance and longevity in demanding operational environments.

SSS Defence asserts that the P-72 boasts an effective range of up to 800 meters, making it suitable for both close-quarters combat and longer-range engagements. Its compatibility with standard 20 and 30 round magazines, coupled with suppressor adaptability, further enhances the rifle's tactical versatility.

Having successfully undergone rigorous internal trials, the P-72 has been offered to a range of Indian paramilitary organizations. SSS Defence is currently participating in multiple tenders, vying to secure contracts that could see the P-72 become the standard-issue weapon for these forces.

This ambitious endeavor by SSS Defence highlights the growing capabilities of India's indigenous defense industry. The P-72 represents a potential shift towards greater self-reliance in small arms procurement for the Indian paramilitary sector.

its high time Army gives a fair chance to SSS defense. Procure the gun in limited numbers give feedback to improve the gun and get a customized version created for army and Dump guns from rest of the world
Government has already invested a hugh amount of resources into the AK rifle factory in UP. They are busy assembling Russian parts and currently only 2-3 years behind schedule. No hope for SSS Defence.

Reminds me of Aeronautical engineer and designer of the Hawker Hurricane Sir Sydney Camm who when remarking on the cancelled British aircraft TSR-2: "All modern aircraft have four dimensions: span, length, height and politics.
This holds true for all weapons platforms.
Armies world over do not select weapons based on meeting requirement criteria alone.
Weapons are also acquired with special consideration given to long term viability of acquisition, economic considerations, viablilty of support of domestic industry and lastly international diplomacy.
US goes so far as to use its might to arm twist other countries to halt development of their programs (Avro Arrow, TR-2, IAI Lavi) to push its own weapons.
Here in India, our Patriotic Import Army prefers to import. When pushed by the MoD, they buy a few token number of ill developed weapons from our DPSUs to display their generosity. And when pushed to the wall, last considerations are reserved for the private sector whose solutions are more often than not put through grudgingly long testings and then some token orders.
On the other hand, our army actually buys whatever DRDO makes. Most of that stuff won't pass any impartial trials. I would rather have them import weapons than buy substandard stuff. As for private sector, we had this discussion before and you couldn't respond.

How come our private sector is able to sell drones, BPJs, personal equipment and armored vehicles with lightening fast trials? But as soon as DRDO comes in, even products made by private sector fails. Why does this always happen with DRDO/DPSUs?

Either sell it to adani or give electoral bonds or else no chance.
