Star Aerospace, a prominent Indian aerospace firm, has been awarded an ₹18 crore contract to supply 2000 upgrade kits for the Indian Army's INSAS Light Machine Guns (LMGs). These kits aim to modernize the INSAS LMGs, enhancing their effectiveness in contemporary combat scenarios.

The upgrade package from Star Aerospace includes a range of features: a Picatinny rail for mounting accessories, a foldable buttstock, a rubberized pistol grip, a 30-round polymer magazine, a Picatinny forehand guard, a forehand grip, and a holographic sight. The kits will be available in tan, black, and olive green, offering flexibility for camouflage and operational needs.

This contract aligns with the broader Indian military strategy of upgrading existing weapon systems. Military planners are opting to enhance the capabilities of widely-used weapons like the INSAS, rather than completely replacing them, citing cost-effectiveness and familiarity for soldiers.

Samir Dhawan, Director of Star Aerospace, emphasized the financial advantage of upgrading the INSAS, stating that a new assault rifle could cost upwards of ₹75,000, while their upgrade offers state-of-the-art features at 45% of that cost. The company has already supplied upgraded INSAS rifles to paramilitary forces and state police, with their design approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
