HUALIEN, TAIWAN – Taiwan's Air Force demonstrated the resilience of its fleet after a powerful earthquake rocked the island nation on April 3rd, 2024. The Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) confirmed that six F-16 fighter jets, stationed at Hualien Air Base near the epicenter of the 7.2-magnitude quake, sustained only minor damage.
The ROCAF's 5th Tactical Composite Wing, which operates a combined force of advanced F-16V and F-5 fighters, was directly in the path of the strongest earthquake to hit Taiwan in the last 25 years. Initial reports indicate the damage to the F-16s consists mainly of scratches and dents, likely results of shifting ground equipment during the tremors.
Military officials emphasize that these issues are easily repairable and will not impact the aircraft's combat readiness. Quick repairs are already underway to restore the jets to full operational status.
The minimal damage is a testament to the robust nature of these fighter jets, particularly in the face of such a major natural event. While buildings in Hualien suffered significant structural damage, the ability of the F-16 fighters to escape severe harm reflects their ability to withstand harsh conditions.
