In a significant step towards propelling India's Green Tug Programme, Kazutaka Nishimura, Director of Toshiba's Battery Division, visited Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) on Thursday.

Accompanied by Maninder Singh, Chairman of Lotus Wireless Technologies (LWT), the visit aimed to solidify a collaborative effort in developing advanced battery solutions for environmentally friendly vessels. This initiative aligns with the Indian government's strong emphasis on sustainable maritime practices.

HSL, a key player in India's green shipping transition, expressed enthusiasm for this partnership. Commodore Hemanth Khatri, Chairman of HSL, stated, "Hindustan Shipyard is proud to be at the forefront of India’s green shipping revolution, working with global leaders like Toshiba and innovative Indian partners like LWT. Together, we are committed to delivering sustainable and high-performance green vessels to drive the maritime industry forward.”

Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Nishimura emphasized Toshiba's commitment to supporting India's green energy goals, particularly within the maritime sector. He highlighted the critical role Toshiba's cutting-edge battery technology will play in achieving the objectives of the Green Tug Programme.

This collaboration seeks to create high-performance, reliable battery systems capable of powering green tugs and other marine vessels. These advanced battery solutions are expected to significantly reduce emissions, enhance operational efficiency, and decrease reliance on fossil fuels.

The Green Tug Programme is a crucial component of India's broader commitment to environmental sustainability and aligns with growing global efforts to decarbonize the shipping industry.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships, and initiatives like the Green Tug Programme demonstrate India's commitment to these international goals.

By leveraging Toshiba's advanced battery technology and HSL's shipbuilding expertise, this partnership aims to contribute significantly to a cleaner, more sustainable maritime sector in India.
