IMPHAL, Manipur – A deadly clash between two unidentified armed groups erupted Saturday in Manipur's Imphal East district, resulting in two fatalities. The shootout, occurring near the tense border of Kangpokpi district, further heightens fears of escalating violence in the region.
Authorities have deployed additional state and central forces in an effort to de-escalate the situation. This incident follows a recent gun battle in the Tengnoupal district, where three individuals sustained injuries.
The recent violence underscores the persistent ethnic tensions within Manipur. In May of last year, a protest march in support of tribal rights ignited clashes that tragically claimed the lives of 219 individuals.
The state's population remains divided, with the Meiteis community representing 53% and primarily inhabiting the Imphal Valley, while tribal groups such as the Nagas and Kukis comprise over 40% and reside in the hill districts.
