India's efforts to domestically produce spare parts have shielded its fleet of Russian-made military aircraft from major disruptions caused by the Ukraine conflict, says Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhary. This "indigenization" of production allows India to maintain its Soviet and Russian-era aircraft.
Lingering Issues and Domestic Solutions
However, India still faces challenges obtaining parts for certain Russian systems. These may include older air defense systems and IL-76 transport aircraft. India is addressing this by expanding its domestic manufacturing of these essential components.India's Strategic Airlift: The Il-76 'Gajraj'
A pillar of India's air power is the Il-76 "Gajraj," a powerful transport aircraft used for long-range, heavy-duty missions. India possesses 17 of these aircraft, each equipped with:- D-30 KP turbofan engines: Providing robust power for heavy payloads.
- Versatile cargo bay: Adaptable for various loads with crane and winch systems.
- Advanced avionics: Navigation radar, direction finder, and distance-measuring equipment for precision flight.
- Defensive capabilities: Radar warning receivers, flares, chaff dispensers, and a tail gun turret.
Russia's Continued, Yet Delayed, Deliveries
India continues to receive some defense shipments from Russia, including Igla-S air defense systems and components for the jointly produced BrahMos cruise missile. However, a key concern is the delayed delivery of S-400 Triumph missile systems. Two units initially expected in 2024 are now estimated for late 2026. The remaining two S-400 units appear to be in the final assembly phase.
